Did you work that out all on your own? I guess it was your superior intellect that got you the job in Argos.

That is a disgusting thing to put.

    returning goods isnt fraud.

returning goods and claiming them to be faulty when they are not, to ensure you get a refund (because the item is exempt from the money back guarantee) IS fraudulent

I managed to return two items (MP3 players) to Argos after Christmas. I knew they were exempt from the 16 day return - it said so on the website, in the catalogue and on the receipt, and I was told at the time of purchase. I bought them as gifts, but they were unsuitable for the recipients (son and brother) because they were pink, and the picture on the box was of a silver player (it did say 'pink' on a sticker, though, but I didn't notice this until Christmas morning AFTER one had been opened).

I knew I had no right to a refund or exchange so I simply stated the problem. The customer services chap was understanding, examined both items, and gave a full refund, not vouchers. I was delighted and impressed with their service, and didn't even have to queue to be served.

I'm sure Argos did well out of the deal, because I bought them at 50% off, but by late December they were back at full price.

Good luck returning the camcorder - I think pavlov's dog's advice is spot on.

    Another tip for you

If you're going to make a 'large loss' on selling it through eBay or wherever else then it seems to me the 'special' wasn't very special in the first place!

I never buy from retailers on the high street before having a browse around the Internet and eBay first. In fact, I would say 80 - 90% of my high street purchases are from spots on MSE :D

Argos. Stuffy Bast**ds, arent they. (Err, present company excepted):)

I'm suprised no-one has mentioned the benefits of taking it to another store for a refund. Thats what I do if I come up against a brick wall.

Individuals in stores can be very picky about what they will do to help so try another store.

Pardon me if this has been mentioned as I didnt trouble to read the whole thresd, just most of it.

I'm sure Pavlovs dog would agree?

I cannot believe a select few are being so rude to pavlovs_dog who is doing his best to advise UKJubilee. Everything he has said is true, I know as I previously worked at Argos. With the attitudes expressed by some people it is no wonder you have a poor experience of Argos. I don't reckon it's a great company but you can't write off every single member of staff in one go. As for paranoid comments about him working for head office, I don't see how you could possibly think that? Even if pavlovs_dog were able to trace the exact transaction from "head office" what would that do? They would know that UKJubilee was honest?

Getting back to the real issue here, Camcorders are excluded from the 16 day money back guarantee with the idea of stopping people from buying them, using them on holiday and then taking them back for a refund. As pavlovs_dog points out, unfortunately abuse of refund policies forces Argos to enforce this policy.

I would reiterate pavlovs_dogs comments, simply be polite, explain the situation and that you couldn't possibly have used the camcorder. If that fails do as rizla01 says, try other stores, or perhaps try the head office customer service number.

Has anyone considered that it may be faulty ??????? As it has not been out of the bag and tried..who knows. There could be a perfectly legitimate fault with it. I agree that Pavlovs dog is being helpful, but as I read it the OP has already done and said most of the advice given - she has explained the situation but Argos are refusing to budge. - best advice is do not buy in haste and also buy over the internet where distance selling rules apply.
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

in theory, it shouldnt make any difference, because argos policy should be applied equally by all members of staff in all stores.

however, in reality, that is not always the case, and sometimes going to another store (or even the same store at a different time of day during a different shift) will get very different results.

one instance where it always pays to go back to the 'home' store is if you have lost your receipt for example, and cannot provide proof of purchase by means of cheque stub/CC statement, but you DO have the picking ticket (the little square of paper that comes taped to your item). DO go to the store where bought - we can often trace the transaation on our system from the info on the ticket (however it is NOT proof of purchase), and in some instances can then refund back in cash/onto credit card rather than in gift vouchers.

it pays to bear in mind that if you have to go back to a store because of Argos' mistake, you may well get better results at the store that messed up in the first place - people at another store might not be so keen to help you if it will skew their results and targets for the week for example.

but the most important thing of all, is to be polite and say when you bought it, whats wrong with it, and what course of action you would like - and see where things go from there.
