I think you will find that the company policies stop till assistants using there own initiative like this. In my job I have to ask each customer if they need any bags unless I can clearly see they have there own. If I don't then I could fail any observations that are made, and fail the mystery customer test.

Yeah, this is the same in the Supermarket where I work as a checkout supervisor.

Also, with regards to customers leaving the shop when we close....We're not allowed to announce that the store is closed, so we have to go round and gather up the customers. I have half an hour from closing time to get the customers served, start the till close on the system, empty money from and lock 26 tills and 4 self scan tills (only once the customers have gone), clean all the checkouts and sweep and mop the floor, empty the bins, fill up all carrier bags and till rolls, lock away the cigarettes and scratchcards and return all security tags to the right department.
That's why I want you out of my shop at closing time :p

How can anyone in their right mind expect store assistants to help them after the store is shut if they're not getting paid.

If you saw your local Sainsburys cashier walking along the highstreet you wouldn't expect any help, so why is it any different when you are too selfish to observe closing times

Funny you should say that. Back when I used to work at Ryman on saturdays while I was at college, I was walking TO WORK with a colleague, both in our uniforms, and a person followed us and was trying to get us to serve him before we got to work. he then hung around the front of the shop, still persisting, while we were waiting for the manager to arrive and open up. When the manager did come (at 8:20) he tried to follow us INTO the shop, then at 9, when we opened, he was first in and moaned that we didn't serve him when he asked us. I'm pretty sure it was obvious that we hadn't started work, the shop wasn't open so we couldn't have done anything.

    Rude !!!!!!.

When I was working in Asda as a student I had a customer start yelling at me because there were no Turkeys left on Xmas eve an hour before closing...

Sometimes customers just want someone to rant at and don't consider that the person they're yelling at is not to blame.

I get asked in shops other than my own for help all the time. People just see the word "staff" on my back, not realising my uniform is completely different.

I didn't get out until 9.30pm tonight... still only paid until 9. I'm so annoyed!

When I worked at everyones favourite red electricals store we devised a system to combat this. We simply taped a few old boxes shut and when dinner time came we would simply pick one up, and stride purposely out the door, dumping the box by the spare cash desk.

We once had somebody who was wandering around 10 minutes after we shut. The salespeople had asked him several times if he wanted some assistance each time he had declined. So most of us got changed as we were off to the pub after work to watch the football.

At 13 minutes past he decides he wants some help, so calls over one of the warehouse guys locking up, The warehouse guy tells him that the store is now closed and that no further service would be given. Of course the customer demands to see a manager, who as it happens left bang on 6.

Cue to the next day, customer came back, demanded the manager, told him what happened and at 4:30 when we shut, we were all kept back and given a right royal roasting for 'losing a sale' and 'putting ourselves before the company.' The warehousman who had explained this to the customer was given a written warning, which was later retracted, and yet more of my precious free time was frittered away by a company who seemed to think that £5.53 and hour claimed a person's soul

It would be very satisfying to tell such people to F%&& Off !

i used to work in a shop and hated xmas eve, you would get the men frantacly running around 5 minutes before the shop was to close picking up any gifts they could get their hands on. i also worked in the clothes section and being a size 8 this apparantly gave larger ladies the right to be rude to me. "you're awfully skinny" was one comment i remember from a particularly big woman, obviously trying to make herself feel better, If i ever asked one of them how they got on in the changing rooms i was often told "its ok for you" or "this shop is only for very skinny people like you", actually the clothes started a at a size 10 so i couldnt wear the clothes if i wanted to. comments like this used to annoy me at first and i admit i had to hold back from saying something horrible once or twice!

Oh but there is nothing better than manning the shut door ( letting out the last few shoppers )on Xmas eve as some drunk comes up to the dooor and asks " What the **** am I meant to do for Xmas lunch?"
The routine is to fix them with a ( genuine ) smile ( I will soon be going home after all) and say " sorry we are closed...... you could try the garages".

This pleasure can make up for all the rude people wanting to know " why the turkeys arent reduced " or "What would suit my 10 year old?"

    TRY IT

 Just been to Tesco where the checkout boy, thought it was his job to comment on the products that were in my trolley "OMG how could you possibly eat that"

Swifly to him that I will buy what I want with my money! and I made a complaint to the duty manager on my way out.
    Won't be shopping there again.
I made a mistake once, believeing people on the internet were my virtual friends. It won't be a mistake that I make again!

I was actually wondering today, what would happen if I saw someone walking out with a TV they'd just bought and said "That's a rubbish one". But then I realised that normal people don't do things like that!
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
