Help!! Pre-lightbulb holiday dilemma

think about it...it cost exactly the same to throw away a £4,000 sofa as it does to throw away a £500 sofa that is nothing at all. money spent is gone... the only factor in the holiday decision is the money left to spend not that which is already spent.0

Personally speaking... Id cancel it.
If you think how long 2 extra K will take to pay off...x amount of months longer in debt... for me no two weeks "off" would be recompense for it.
Slightly biased here as we have a "red letter days" gift of whale watching in cornwall we were going to take in the next few months, but after totalling up the hotel, meals and transport to cornwall, weve decided not to bother now, and do something closer to home instead so we dont lose the gift, but dont pay any more than we need to when we cant afford it. Im really pleased with our decision, it would have been nice, but much nicer when we dont have to watch every penny.
Best of luck whatever you decide. x:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I would bet that the holiday company may transfer it to something cheaper. Worth asking tomorrow b4 you make any harsh decisions?
We (5 of us) are going to Devon for 2 weeks school hols 12-26th August and its costing us £648 for the 2 weeks!.... We also get £100 back on arrival.
Ok it's only a holiday camp, but we are only using it as a base to sleep, but the kids will love it!!!

No question... forfeit the holiday and kill some debt!
I'd discuss it with the holiday company... no need for detail.. just tell them you're really struggling (e.g. say you've had some unexpected bills or whatever) and ask them what the options are. They may look sympathetically (but don't hold your breath on that one)... but if you don't ask you won't know.
If they won't refund it (probable!) then ask if there are any other options.. defer to next year even. Also ask if you are able to "sell" it... it'd probably go pretty quicklyon e-Bay (e.g. even if you only got 50% back then you've halved the loss)...
Anyway... good luck... let us know how you go on - and also how you go with the smoking (is there a quit-smoking thread in MSE?)0 -
I managed to defer a holiday to the next year once for health reasons, and it was fully paid up.
Good luck with whatever you choose and hopefully your holiday company will have a sympathetic option for you.

Good morning Ali.
I saw this thread last night and have slept on it before replying. I'm afraid I'd definately cancel the holiday. I think that if you do the Snowball Calculator, put in your debts and add the £2k that you'd spend on the holiday to paying it off you'd be pleased to see how much sooner you'd pay it off. On the other hand you should also do the Snowball and add the £2k debt to it and see how much longer it takes to be debt free.
The diference between the two dates, paying an extra £2k off or adding £2k's worth of debt should tell you that if you want to be a DFW you should cancel.
You should be able to get a much cheaper break in this country that your little one will really enjoy. You can always come and stay with me for a week!! But we are not at the sea - just rolling countryside!
Sorry if this doesn't help but it is my honest view.

Just imagine the feelings of guilt you will be experiencing whilst you are sunning yourself on a distant beach.
If you have truly experienced your LBM then surely there is only one decision you can make.

I would go to be honest but I love holidays anyway. If I'd booked a holiday and didn't go I'd loose all motivation to pay the debts off. I'm the sort of person who needs something to focus on and tend to live from one holiday to the next (no wonder I'm in debt).Barclaycard 3800
