Help!! Pre-lightbulb holiday dilemma

Options
Last summer, before my lightbulb moment in November, I booked our summer holiday for this year. Deposit of £265 paid.

Now, the rest has to be paid by mid-June - £1200 and then we'll need spending money @ £700. This is 2 weeks in Greece.

I've been wrestling with this for days and head vs. heart decision is not matching up. Basically, I'd have to put £400 of the cost on a cc (or use my 0% overdraft) - the rest has/is being funded by saving.

What do I do?

One minute my head says cancel it and pay £1500 off my debt, another my heart says do it and around I go in circles. Not helped by my parents saying "you need your holiday, you work so hard, etc, etc."

Help me please!

I take it if you cancel you will lose your deposit?

Can you perhaps re-book a week away instead and the deposit you already paid goes to that one?

    oooo toughy.
Would you lose all the deposit??? Could you sell holiday to a friend who doesn't have debt, and get them to give you money for deposit?? £1500 off you debt would be a huge amount!!!

Yes, deposit would be lost - I wonder if I could reduce it to one week though and not lose anything except off the overal cost?

    Hmm...there's a thought. Thanks SS

what are the terms and conditons of the holiday booking....are you liable for the full cost if you cancel?...or do you merely lose the deposit or what???

if you can afford the holiday have it , it you can't don't.

I don't know any single Mums that could afford the cost to be honest.

    I know I can't this year!

Don't spend £1900 on a holiday. Write the £265 off if necessary. £265 vs £1900.
Meanwhile talk to the holiday people and see what you can do. You might be able to sell the holiday to someone else and reclaim the deposit. Or talk to holiday company and see if you could put the £265 towards a much cheaper holiday.

Ali-Ok - just a thought is there any way that you can defer the holiday until next year or some other time and not lose the deposit? You can tell the travel agents that something has come up - make it a great big porky! You would then be able to save up slowly for the holiday? Just a thought anyway...

I've just checked the T's&C's and I'd lose only the deposit if I cancel before end of April. I like the idea of deferring to next year, but this is where my head says it's better used to pay off the debt until it's all gone.

Ali I genuinely feel for you on this one. That is a killer of a dliemma.

But common sense sways towards cutting your loses, if you can't defer it or maybe the last resort (no pun intended :o ) having a week away if they will let you!
