I agree....in the end I found a local key cutter who made me a cop & programmed it for me far far far far cheaper than mercedes wanted :eek:We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will0 -

SOOOOO i ordered a blank uncut, buttonless key from ebay! lol It's literally an identical key case with an uncaut key blade. I then took the buttons out of my mashed key, added a fresh battery, put them in the new key, got the blade cut ... and it worked!!! WOOP WOOP
But no mention of moving the transponder chip ?
so are you saying Toyotas are completely insecure this respect
edit : Oh I see now "There are 3 on my high street which all offer replacement key fob cutting and programming"0 -
how much does it cost to have an actual key cut - not fobs or anything at the local cutters? similar price to house keys???0

Hi bob, the transponder chip was what i was talking about when i said "I then took the buttons out of my mashed key, added a fresh battery, put them in the new key"
There was nothing wrong with the transponder and it could therefore be taken out of the broken casing and put straight into the new one. In my opinion it does open up an aspect of insecurity, but it's the same across all the car brands. Really the £180 for a nice man in a dealership jumpsuit to change the keys is for peace of mind only.
They try to scaremonger you with talk of "programming" but this is only necessary if your transpponder chip has stopped working, ie. you press the buttons and nothing happens (but chances are this could be fixed with a new battery). This is because they have to get a new key, with a new unprogrammed chip fresh from the manufacturer, and therefore can charge a premium for the service. Yet as i said the local key cutters can provide the exact same service for roughly 20% of the price
hope that clears up my original post, it was written in "excited-girl-talk" lol.
basically if your buttons/transponder still work you're looking at £10.
If your key has suffered irreprible damage and the transponder/buttons don't work:
1. first try a fresh battery, if still no joy,
2. it's gonna be around £30-50 at a key cutter for a new key with a new transponder

I paid £2.50 for my toyota key to be cut, which was actually cheaper than getting the key cut for my front door which was £6.
and yes, both keys were cut at the same shop.Debt@LBM1=£4050 1st DFD 27/08/09Debt @LBM2 =£14,469.97 2nd DFD 14/03/2018 :T

i was told the same by the guy I bought the car off. As it turns out though the key has got a transponder inside and will cost £150 for a new key with transponder. he failed to mention that part.0
