Hi guys I don't usually venture on to this board but after the success i had last week i felt this was something that i needed to share, as I haven't yet seen it mentioned anywhere on the site.
It's regarding my transponder key fob for my 53 plate toyota yaris! I have 3 keys, 2 of which have the plastics cased alarm buttons, and one which is just an emergency entry key.
Long story short, the plastic casing smashed to bits on Key 1, so i started using Key 2, which last weekend i smashed to bits. The buttons still work and the key turns but they're not too pretty to look at and are held together with mountains of gaffa tape! lol
So i rang my local toyota dealership and asked for two new keys, expecting something in the region of £50 a key.
NOPE!!!! £360!!!!!!!
it's £180 per key!!!!!!!
now i can't carry on using broken keys, for fear of the buttons packin in all together which would mean replacing my car's ECU (computer) at £1500 + labour + VAT.
SOOOOO i ordered a blank uncut, buttonless key from ebay! lol It's literally an identical key case with an uncaut key blade. I then took the buttons out of my mashed key, added a fresh battery, put them in the new key, got the blade cut ... and it worked!!! WOOP WOOP
total spend...... (drum roll please) .......... £10!!!!!
THATS A £170 SAVING PER KEY!!!
Now i'm not the kind of person to take things to bits to play with them so i was a bit dubious, but if you are able to get your sim card out of your mobile, well, thats about the same level of difficulty as this was, lol, and to think of all the times i'd paid £25 for batteries to be replaced when i could have done it myself for about 99p
Now i know for definite this works with Toyota key fobs, but from what i've seen and read online, apparently it can be done for pretty much any car brand. So if you're missing a key or using a mangled one like i have been this is definitely worth a go!!!!!! and if your not up for doing it yourself you can nip to your local key cutters. As an example i asked mine and they said for my pants toyota key would be £30, for my dads merc £50 (merc quoted £300 per key). So still a saving to be had!

Good for you, its worth noting,
have to say this, youre pretty good as smashing key fobs eh.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
:rotfl:not so much smashing, as having too many keyrings/bottle openers/daft things dangling from my semi plastic keys and therefore turning them in the lock with all the weight results in smashed to bits keys :rotfl:
but my new key is living on it's own at the moment, i've gone all Gollum with it, lol.Debt@LBM1=£4050 1st DFD 27/08/09Debt @LBM2 =£14,469.97 2nd DFD 14/03/2018 :T

anyone know of avoiding using Merc dealers for replacement keys? OK with ID but not the price they're asking !!0
-
if you don't wanna have a go yourself i would definitely head to a local key cutter. There are 3 on my high street which all offer replacement key fob cutting and programming, and for my dads C180 i was quoted £50 or less by every single one of them
and this guarantees genuine merc keys
personally i like ebay lol
oh and absolutely no ID necessary at key cuttersDebt@LBM1=£4050 1st DFD 27/08/09Debt @LBM2 =£14,469.97 2nd DFD 14/03/2018 :T
