Tvs work differently to set top boxes. Most set top boxes have amps built in and WILL work with weak signals (Some tvs do to, but dont amplify as much). Tvs are built to a little more 'exacting standards' where freeview is concerned and so are built on the understanding that the signal entering it will be of sound quality (Which yours clearly isnt)
Until you use a roof aerial its unlikely your going to get good results. You CAN try an amp as it is, but all your doing is amplifying a bad signal in the 1st place which 'might' work. But the picture will never be as good as it could be even if it does.

Ill reiterate ~ theres nothing wrong with your tv and if I wired it upto my roof aerial im 99% sure it would work perfectly. Theres nothing stopping you using your set top box anyways if you absolutely refuse to use a roof aerial (Or cant for some reason)

I have got a roof aerial, well it's attached to my chimney.

Seems like I will return the telly, can't belive that a £20 set top box can pick up a better signal than a few hundred quid telly.

does your set top box have an aerial loop through? I.E aerial out, if so you could use it as an amplifier and see if that works. I use my video recorder like that. If my aerial is plugged directly into the telly the picture is rubbish but if plugged into the video then the telly the picture is OK. This is for a spare telly in the bedroom.

Spoke to Richer Sounds help desk and they said try using a signal booster, so I'm off to Argos after work to pick one up otherwise it's straight down the shop for a refund.

Richer Sounds would have to test it in-store for you, surely? If they can't prove it's not faulty...

Conversely, if it is just the case that your signal is average, then almost any TV you buy will have the same problem.

Try a manual tune with the TV before confronting Richer. My daughter has similar, PVR box auto tunes no problem but Samsung built in tuner doesn't pick up all automatically. Signal strength only 40% so if yours is less or the same then the manual tune could be the only option. There's strength and quality info in the TV's menu system. Consult the user manual on how to do the tune and strength details.
Enter you postcode here http://www.ukfree.tv/txdetail.php?a=SK113003 for your transmitter and the channel number information. It is a pain but will hopefully tune manually and sometimes needs more than one attempt. Obviously yours will not be Sutton Coldfield!
I've personally found that on my own Samsung TV the external box has a far superior picture to that of the Samsung built in anyway, but it's useful to record two programmes and watch a third at the same time!

Miss read that you use a roof aerial. Id guess its not set correctly then (Or a poor connection somewhere down the line)

Spoke to Richer Sounds customer service and they told me to try a signal booster so went to Argos to get one, made no difference to the signal what-so-ever, so that will be going back to them very soon.

Called Richer Sounds again yesterday and the customer helpline said they will get local branch to ring me back in a few minutes to discuss, still waiting for this call.

    Just a quick update,

Richer Sounds called the other day and told me to return the telly to the store and discuss my options.
So just taken telly back to them and got a full refund, would have looked around for alternative if it wasn't for the fact I had only paid for 20min in a car park.
Also with this telly it came on by itself from stand-by mode twice while we were out.
So a big thumbs up to Richer Sounds for their no quibble full money back refund.
