I use AVG.
It is free and does the job.
Don't even THINK of putting the heap of junk Norton's on your computer. It takes over the computer, slows everything to a crawl and s a nightmare to get rid of. I had it and I could make a cup of tea whilst waiting for the computer to be usable from stating it up.

I'm very pleased to say that you're wrong! (Not because I like telling people they are wrong, but because my computer is still very speedy with it on! )

When was the last time you used Norton by the way? You might be interested to know that they completely re-built the code for this year, and so is much less resource hungry than it was up until 2008. I certainly wouldn't advise using anything before the 2009 version as they were slow, and have unfortunately given Norton a bad reputation.

They have got their act together for the 2009 version, and is very cheap if you get it off somewhere like Amazon.

£25 aint bad for three pc's. But IMHO, I would look at Avira's security suite for £12.95.

AVG is great on XP and older

for VISTA use AntiVir free version

for Firewall Comodo is hard to beat unless you go the hardware route.

@ tomsolomon consider using Sandboxie, it's NOT for beginners but you should have enough knowledgde to use it.

If you look at the latest version of AVG and Norton it's the other way round - AVG is slow and clunky, but Norton uses less than 20MB of RAM and is nice 'n fast...

Comparing the PRO versions of Comodo and Outpost, Outpost wins
Comparing the FREE versions Comodo wins.

I spend a lot of time performing penetration tests both are pretty good for software level, protection, neither has any real downside, in the end I think just a case of personal preference.

Most people prefer free, that's why I'd recommend Comodo, especially with Vista..

I admit I dumped Norton over a year ago.
It was, as I said, a piece of junk which slowed my computer to the point of making it unusable.
Glad they have sorted it out but I think the PR damage has been done.

I have had McAfee on my Dell computer since new - suppose because it was there initially I just stuck with it.

When it comes to renewal time I contact them and tell them that I don't want it anymore. They always come back and offer to at least halve the price and so I then renew it for a further year (usually about £19.99)

Can't say it is brilliant as after a few years it does seem to have slowed the computer down, but then again as far as I know it has kept it pretty well protected.

Is there really much to choose between any of them? They just seem to be a necessary evil:eek:
