Mcafee Licence fee

I recently bought a laptop with a 1 month's free trial of Mcafee internet security. However, I now received an email asking me to pay £42 to renew my licence. I'm sure I have seen Mcafee a lot cheaper to buy. Is £42 a fair charge. I'm wondering whether to install Norton instead. Any advise please would be appreciated.

Don't install either, they are both very poor and resource-hogging AV programs. Install Avira (free) or Kaspersky (paid for but currently free if you use Barclays online banking).
PS: just checked and Mcafee is £30 if you buy it direct off their website. What does that tell you about their marketing policies?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Norton is not the resource hog it used to be. I've got the Norton Internet Security 2009, which I got off Amazon for £25 for a 3 user edition! And it uses less than 10MB of memory in my case. You wouldn't notice it running in the background, whereas I found when I used Avira that it slowed down my computer much more. In any case, get rid of McAfee!

  • Thanks Macman for your reply. I'm not happy with Mcafee, and I thought that their fee is outrageous. Would it be OK to uninstall Mcafee and install Kaspersky as you suggested? Should I install Kaspersky before I take mcafee off or doesn't it matter which way round I do it?

Uninstall McAfee first. Also use their removal tool (available from here http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507) as standard uninstallation from the likes of McAfee and Norton can leave a lot of stuff behind. Then install your choice of Antivirus. Having 2 antivirus apps installed ican be hazardous as they will most likely conflict which is why you should uninstall first.

I think that would probably give you a 3-PC licence RIK (big deal).

I use Kaspersky myself, but Bullguard is worth considering at this amazing price.
