Good news, I have a bank account.

Thumbs up to the ROYAL BANK OF SCOTLAND. :T

Today they helped me open up a basic Key account (downside is no cheque book or OD) but its a start. :j And I also have a new savings account opened.
Very friendly people (made me a cup of tea) :p lovely to chat too, very helpful and full of advice without it being over whelming.

I told the advisor about all my debt problems and my plans for the future (savings and house buying)
I am speaking to a financial advisor soon who will advise me on the best way to save my money, talk to me about life insurance and so on.

I never had any of this help from Abbey and whilst it may be you every day bank chat, its all new to me and I think they are a good bank. :A (so far)

In the next few months I may be able to upgrade to a proper bank account :rotfl: and possibly get a small loan :j (if I need one)

It has given me peace of mind for my future. :D

    Appointment with Halifax ....
  • I really would not buy anything from my bank. Go and see them, take copious notes, get everything in writing, then come back to this site and compare everything. My guess is you will get better cover at lower rates. Then when you have, print out all the information, go back to RBS and show them why you will not be buying any of their products or services. Unless of course their offers are better!

I'm with RBS at the moment - Generally their staff are quite friendly (They always make you a coffee when your waiting at my branch - I know its not much but at least they have some of the small things right wich is nice - although their bank charges can be quite high and spiral out of controll very quickly). I have had a chat with their FA about insurance etc. They seemed okay and good value for money - well until I shopped around after reading some recommendations on this site.

To be fair though unless you get charges etc they are one of the better banks for customer service etc. I got refused for one of their credit cards from the form I filled in, my next bank review I mentioned this and the girl clicked a few buttons and said i'd recieve the card shortly :-) So much better talking to a person to get a decision than a computer making it.

    Hope this helps

I am also with RBS and while I agree that they seem quite friendly in the Branch, they have become pants for actually getting things done in my experience. They are VERY quick at giving loads etc (tying you to them) but really bad at cancelling things. For example in one instance a couple of years ago I re-financed my load/debts (pre-moneysaving days) and they "forgot" to cancel the Direct Debit for the original loan. I got the money back a few days later, but was a real hassle as at this point I was working on a weekly rate via an agency.

A little later I transfered my money over from a Postoffice account set up for me by grandparents when I was born. It came as a Post Office (HM Government) Cheque and I had to wait 2 weeks to be able to access this as they needed to verify that the amount was "legitimate" and not part of money laundering. Now call stupid, but I am not sure how they could check this?

More recently I tried to cancel my LOANGUARD policy with them (following advice from MSE) and dutifully wrote them a letter (can't be done over the phone) expecting that it wouldl then be taken care of quickly as I was assured when I signed up for it that it was "simple" to cancel. 3 phone calls later it was finally passed on to the cancellation arm and only after I became forceful. The letter went in 8th Feb and it was cancelled on the 30th March. I was then told that I would still pay that rate for a month after the cancellation.

Needless to say I am in the process of moving my account. I just don't trust them to do anything any more
