Appointment with Halifax

Hi,

I'm going to Halifax on Saturday with the OH to discuss our finances. We are currently with Barclays but it's never bad to look around.
Is there anything to watch out when approaching Halifax?
The personal banker which we will be seeing seems professional. She spoke with the OH for about half an hour a few weeks ago.
I didn't get the impression that my local Barclays personal banker was that professional. When opening a 10% savings account he wanted to set up two for us while we have a joint savings account. The terms and conds clarely state that you can only open 1 10% account when you have a joint account. But this guy didn't know his own product and tried to convince us that it wasn't the case untill I showed it.

Halifax are tied for financial services. If you are going to discuss anything other than a current account or savings account then you may as well cancel the appointment now.

If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.

I am not so filled with doom & gloom - but of course the HBOS person will want to sell HBOS products first.

Nonetheless they will have an obligation to give you best advice - so I'd take the free advice and then think it over.

Of course you MUST ask the adviser what qualifications and number of years of experience s/he has...

As others have said - they are not Independant. And make sure they understand your attitude to risk.

Thats not strictly true. It may be a play on words but if they gave you best advice, they wouldnt sell anything but send you to an IFA. ;)

They have an obligation to find out information on you and recommend the best product from their product range to fit your needs. With most banks having a product range of 8-15 products/funds, that range can be limiting compared to the tens of thousands available through independents.

You can get all the information you need from their website, there is no need to have a personal appointment. They will just try and pressure you into getting a current account.

You can apply for all their services over the internet.

I will be interested to hear the outcome of this appointment.
The Halifax have been trying to get me in for 'a chat' for a while - they keep offering to upgrade an account I have with them to their new current account.
I only use this account for transfering money into a ISA I hold with them - my main current account is with Barclays.

if you have an appointment with a banking adviser - those that open current account, loans and savings accounts, this will be a simple review appointment

if you see a PFA - Personal Financial Adviser you will receive advice, but they are tied to their own funds

Two different types of appointments all together

My Dad went to see an 'adviser' at HSBC. Apparently my Dad knew more than the adviser who was just trying to flog all HSBC products even though he was supposed to be 'independent.'

My last visit went along the lines of:

Halifax Person: Would you consider this/that/the other?

Me: Would you, if you were me?

    Halifax Person: I can't say.

    Just cancelled my next appointment.

HSBC dont have independent advisors in the branch.

Recent surveys have shown that many people see advisors in the belief that they are independent when they are not.
