How to stop cat being so fussy food wise?

Feeling the backbone is definitely normal. If your cat is apparently happy and healthy then don't worry too much about feeding her. Try to imagine how awful it would be to have to put her on a diet!!

I think the really amazing thing is that Buttonmoons has a cat that isn't fussy!
If they are not hungry they don't eat and when they are hungry they tell us.... insistently :rotfl:
One thing I do now is remove uneaten wet food after 30 mins or so. They know this now, so if they want to eat it they have to eat it while it is fresh, or that horrible human feeds it to the fishes! My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead

It's not wise to leave uneaten wet food out too long at this time of year, the flies will find it and lay their eggs on it. This is the reason I don't dispose of the uneaten food in my waste-bin in the kitchen: maggots hatching out in the bin. Blech!0

We have 2 boys that will eat anything...Whiskas is usual, but Felix, Hills, all the fancy stuff the MIL buys for her picky Siamese that they then won't eat, all goes the same way. That said, so does lettuce, celery, potato, pizza, dried bread, burnt chips and guinea pig dried food mix. "Bottomless pits" doesn't quite do justice. :rotfl:
The only thing they're NOT so keen on is Tuna and Beef flavours...but if I have to feed them, I leave them to it and it all goes in a few hours (in the kitchen - no flies live long here, because 2 fast energetic cats compete to see who can be first to get the extra protein..:D). Biscuits we rarely feed, usually as a bribe. Furball treats are always fought over (but I tend to feed them both a bit of butter from fingers every few days instead).
I LOVE having non-picky cats.0 -
My cat seems to like the jelly  in Felix pouches. He eats all that first, then begs for more. If you ignore him, he will eventually eat the meat.
He is a total pain in the Ar@e when it comes to food and I cannot tell you how much money I have wasted buying stuff he wont eat! Freecycle have done very well out of me.
He will eat the dry but his "jelly" is the firm favourite!Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

Our cat constantly begs for food. she is fed 4 times a day, 3 times with half a pouch of felix and her last is dried food. i sometimes wonder if half a pouch is enough but have tried a full one and she is promptly sick!!!
Preparing our own food used to be a nightmare with her wowling but she is banned now from the kitchen during meal times.
I dont know if anyone else has any advice re the amount of food
She get normal check ups at the vets, is normal weight, bright and sparky
and she also sleeps a lot, (till she can smell food)
She has some Maine Coon in her if that makes any difference.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Ours get a whiskas sachet each in the morning, at whatever time (fixed times isn't happening with morning sickness missus to think of due to smell), and again at night before bed.
Hex is a bit of a bruiser..V. stocky, bordering on occasional lardarse...Fudge is a skinny little boy. VERY skinny, almost siamese frame. Given that his rear is "jacked up" and he's VERY flexible and lanky, he's got to have some oriental in there somewhere.
Both are happy, and I "sit in" on meals to make sure he's getting his plate..but he's determined to stay a skinny boy. Neither whinge for food, and the Vet thinks they're both fine..:)
To be fair, even when I've left it over 12 hours between feeds (8am, and 11pm), they don't hassle. Very easy going as cats go.0 -
I would move away from 'supermarket' brands find a local pet shop. Supermarket foods are full of cereals and cats are strict carnivores. Wet is important as they aren't big water drinkers (see previous post lol). I find my Spud quality wet (no derivatives - beaks, feet & bones; not digestible) Applaws or Almo Nature which have real meat! Orijen does seem to be the best food as it is the only one without all the grains and rice which cats aren't made for. Loads on the Internet regarding the preservatives used by the supermarket brands such as BHA BHT ethoxyquin. Stay clear of these and any derivatives.
You may need to 'teach' your cat to eat these as the supermarket crap is sprayed with digest (fat) to make it more palatable - although saying this Orijen is eaten by my Spud in no time as I guess he knows it has meatHelp me to help you :santa2:0 -
Mine have been fed on Tesco Cat Crunchies their whole lives. Took one for her vaccinations today and the vet said it was a pleasure to see an older cat who was lean and in good condition (she is 12). She said her teeth were in excellent condition as well and she had a good strong heartbeat.
Having said that they do have a lot of treats as well - fish, chicken, tiny bits of bacon and a little bit of wet food as well, but dry food is their main diet.0
