Kennel cough protection

Most if not all kennels won't take dogs now unless they've had kennel cough innoculation (I know they squirt it up the dogs nose but can't think what else to call it).

How long after this is done can the dog be safely taken to boarding kennels? Also does anyone know approximately how it costs currently?

I think it's 4 days? (some websites say 72 hours though - so 3 full days).

It's typically about £20 (depends where you are as well), but make sure your vet gives the NEW Nobivac one which is now certified for 12 months and not the others which are only 6 months.

Ah nobivac, I think that's what they had last time (2007) so it's well out of their systems now. Thanks, I had a feeling they had to have it done about a fortnight before, that's good news!

  • Many kennels don't actually insist on the kennel cough vaccine being given because they know it's essentially pointless (like vaccinating a human against getting a cold). As long as the dog is up to date with jabs, that's the main thing.

72 Hours minimum for Nobivac KC, 5 days for Bronchishield - both give 12 months protection against Bordatella. Not all kennels will be happy with the minimum, some near me insist on 2 weeks before. Ask the kennels.

Thanks snowman, I don't live near you, but maybe that's where I got the idea about 2 weeks from - maybe the boarding kennels I used last time insisted on that length of time also.
They had their normal jabs in February 09.

Obviously they are a lot more knowledgeable than any vet or vaccine manufacturer...

Given that it is protecting your dog and not other dogs in the kennels, I can't see why some kennels think they know better.

Under the new licensing laws, boarding kennels have to insist on the kennel cough vaccine as well as the normal jabs - they have no choice. You and I may know it's pointless, but this is now law and they have to abide by it if they want to retain their license.

    Maybe not true.

We have just looked on the Edinburgh cat and dog home kennels(the do boarding as well) and they now say their policy has changed and dogs do not need the kennel cough vac. now.

Not found one in our area who is wanting the k.c vac. for boarding

None of the kennels here ask for the KC vaccine... probably because it's as mentioned like trying to vaccinate against a cold - too many variants out there :) One animals I'd recommend giving it to are like with humans and flu jabs - the old, young and ones with a low immune system anyway... :)
