Friend at credit card company disclosing MY INFO!

Options
Hi,
I have a friend (ha!) who, I have found out, has told my other friends about my financial difficultys regarding my credit card account, and now im subject to a lot of embarresment!

Now, call me silly, but im sure that there must be something in the data protection act or something like that that prohibits such info being leaked, because, to me, its like a doctor telling his friends about his patients illnesses!

Could someone please help me with this so i can gather some ammuntion to report my 'so called friend' to her employer, because i dem this to be absoulty outragious!

Thanks!

Basically it is a breach of the Data Protection Act. Disclosing financial data about someone without authority. Just report it as that, its serious and your (ex) mate will get the sack - well they should! So expect it to turn messy.... but then again they aint much of a mate anyway are they!

Out of name and shame, who is the lender? Not Halifax - please tell me it isn't lol (they are notorious for chatting in pubs about customers accounts) If not then I guess it could well be Southend-on-Sea?

  • No, it was Vanquis Bank.
I dont suppose you know the section number of the DPA?

And also my 'ex' friend has given my new mobile number to the company! What a cheek!

All this only came to light when another friend rang me and asked if everything was ok, because i hadnt paid my cc.
And 2bh, i couldnt give a flying f**k if she gets the sack or not!
  • no advise but you will obviously be better of without that shower.

who needs enemies eh, all the best!!!
If your lucky enough to be irish, your lucky enough ;)
  • oh true, no one needs enemies, but this is damn right outragious in my eyes, and she deserves her comeupance in my view!

I would certainly report her for doing this (and have no hesitation either!), bad enough she looked at your details, but told your friends too?!!

I would certainly be writing a letter of complaint for starters, they will be able to see from computer records if she has been accessing your account, how many times she accessed it, what she looked at etc.
I would imagine they're not supposed to access accounts of family/friends.

A former colleague of mine did this with regards to a database in the criminal justice system, and quite rightly got sacked.
96 items decluttered so far in 2013 :)
  • Well, I will definalty be contacting the bank about the matter! Its an outrage! Apparently though, after googling the matter, it could involve a 2 year custodial sentance to the employee who decided to tell my pals! god ridance to her, sorry if sounds bit harsh, but as i said originally, i feel it to be like a doctor/patient thing!
  • thats horrendous. I am on Mat leave from a CC co.

No way should any employee do that.

Hope you get an outcome in this as that is most definetly not on.

I don't know about complaining to the bank, I'd be tempted to go straight to the information commissioner.

Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."
  • Thank you all for your advice, (Mrcow, I shall go straight to ICO) and will let you all know the progress as and when I hear it!

Pointless going straight in to ICO as they have a huge backlog and the friend could leave before this time meaning she could continue to work in financial services. ICO are taking 6-14 months to deal with cases! I'm still on month 4 and heard nothing about my complaint!

I'd be writing to vanquis and demanding immediate action be taken. Try this:

    Data Protection Officer
    Vanquis Card
    Executive Department
    PO Box 399
    Chatham
    ME4 4WQ
