Any problems with Induction Hobs?

  • We are thinking of getting a Neff induction hob in our new kitchen. Has anyone used a wok on one? If so how successful was it?
I have also heard that you can't put anything underneath the hob, ie you have to leave a reasonable space, due to heat. Does anyone have any ideas?
  • We bought an induction hob from IKEA last year. Absolutely love it. Heats up faster than gas, easy to clear as just a smooth glass plate, automatically turns off when you take the saucepan off and automatically adjusts the size of the heating ring depending on the size of the pan. We cook loads of stir frys on it in with our wok...no problems at all. We have the cutlery drawer directly underneath it...I think the manual specs a 5mm gap. Only problem is that the cats turn it on when you walk on the buttons lol (but we have the child lock on so it doesn't really turn on, and if it did, it would turn any rings on anyway, as it will on do so if it detect a saucepan there...) lol

We have a Neff induction hob and are very happy with it. Instantly hot. We bought a £2 Ikea wok and it is fine, though we haven't used it a great deal. Ikea is your place for cheap induction pans.

Is this your IKEA induction hob

    NUTID HIN4T

not allowed to post link yet.

If so does it work by allowing a temperature to be set rather than a power level?

    Thanks

  • I too have a Neff Induction Hob. It is just over 2 years old and the same thing has happened- flashing E for a few weeks followed by intermittent failure and cutting out during cooking. Engineer advises new PCB - cost £222. No joy from Neff. I am consulting Trading Standards as this is unacceptable in an appliance, very little used, after 2 years. Will never buy Neff again....
  • We recently bought a Fagor IFF-4R hob and are experiencing a weird situation. When running the front and back zones together (left or right), they seem to cycle in turn eg front pan has heat for about 1 second then stops then back pan on 1 second then front etc. This means you cant maintain a simmer for example. You can also hear it clicking like an annoying clock as it cycles. If you use the hob any other way ie 2 fronts or 2 backs or even front left and rear right there is no 'pulsing' effect. Anyone else get the same on their hob?
I rang Fagor and they say it's normal and all induction hobs do it. Please help me answer this. I have been offered a refund but need to know what to do about replacing it.
  • Has anyone heard of a problem where an induction hob could kill the electronics in a quartz watch?
My wifes' Breitling stopped working and they said it must have come into contact with something with a magnetic field and they suggested halogen hob, induction hob, microwave or fridge (cost £500 to fix!). I didnt realise any of those appliances actually created a magnetic field? Our fridge and micowave are built in - so she couldnt have left the watch on top. So the only culprit left is the Bosch induction hob ? Any comments anyone?
    Cheers

Sorry, don't know about claim. But ... we have an el cheapo single induction hob from Lidl and I always use it with good quality (ie thick, Bounty or similar) kitchen paper on top. Has absolutely no effect on cooking that I have noticed. So it catches my drippy spills (I'm such a sloppy cook!), keeps hob clean, and prevents scratches. I have also used a tea towel for the same purpose. Whether this would work with the more clever hobs I am not sure.

Even though cheap I adore my one-eyed hob. So much so that I am about to take the plunge and buy a full hob. I am abandoning my freestanding cooker and going for a built in job (can't hack bending down to lift stuff/see grill etc). Thing is we live in a rental, and are likely to stay doing so in the current economic climate. So I will buy a tall cabinet to place on the end run of the kitchen units for the oven to go in. But the hob is a bit of a tricky question. Do we lob out the freestanding cooker and put in a single unit to accomodate the hob? Our worktop is only 59.5 cm deep ... Is that enough? Or do we try a cheap solution of building a box to sit on top of (to be disconnected) cooker to house the hob? Would that work OK? I don't see any problems with that except that it wouldn't look too great!
I would love to have a Neff (the T44T43N0). I know they are expensive but I'd rather use the money I have in the bank before the crash comes than lose it all, but then again, I don't want to pay so much for something that might die in a couple of years! So I am also thinking of the Ikea NUTID HIN4T (which is also a little smaller). But not sure of the reliability in the long-term (and then I read something like this at .ikeafans.com/forums/kitchen-appliances/54946-nutid-induction-cooktop-dead-after-15-minutes.html and I think YIKES!).

    Induction is just brilliant.
