  • Morning guys :D

Well day 1 didn't quite go to plan lol, i got to the gym, complete with my new very unflattering shorts, lol, but it was HEAVING!!!! obviously handforth Total Fitness is the only place in cheshire with air con. Managed to steal a treadmill for 35 mins, but suprisingly managed to squeeze 2.5 miles in!!!! :D:D:D:D yay me! Was a bit annoyed as i only went to the gym so i could use their uber scales that gives you the print out of all your vital whatsits (height, weight, body fat %, bmi etc) and i ended up leaving feeling i could have done more than the 2.5 miles, so tonight i'm goin alfresco with my garmin :T gonna play with mapmyrun and pick a route

I think we mentioned this a couple of weeks ago and decided it was best left for a while since the fartlek was being thoroughly enjoyed.

But, yes, if we're talking about mile times in the region of 8 minutes (which cant be far off when the average for the entire fartlek session is 9min/mile) then it may well be time to slowly introduce some proper intervals.

Btw these weather forecasters are struggling a bit at the moment - we were predicted to have a full day of hot, burning sunshine and the hottest temperatures in the country - well its peeing it down and cool:p.

Oooo well done Pink - thats a good time there :D

I know you feel like you want to do more (and I can hardly talk running on my rest day) but dont make a habit of going out twice a day if you can - it takes a lot more out of your body than you realise! But have fun alfresco later!!!
  • cheers becky :D i resisted the urge to do more and compensated for the lack of miles with a bit of rowing and some weights, but went home and i played football with my mad staffie instead lol, plus i got sucked into Murray's match, couldn't believe he was still playing at 9.30pm when i got back from the gym, and he carried on for another hour!

It is hot - I find wetting my hair before I go out helps keep me cooler but I suppose it doesnt work as well with you guys...

Motivation wise - think about your goal - every completed week is one week closer to that and every run is a part of a completed week - they all help you improve and build over time (sort of like lego - when I feel really lazy I like to think of what I can build out of my lego runs so far - how many pieces do I have and how many more do I need, it usually makes me go out - I am big geek :p)

My hair is long and curly at the moment anayway so hopefully getting it cut this week but it is generally longish!!

Thats the first I ever refered to running as logo!!

I really want to try and get out 3 times a week but its just settling into a routine at the min which is hard!!

    Marathon Motivation?

I love the way this video is billed as :

'If you have never run a marathon, this will give you a taste of what it is like and hopefully give you a bit of motivation if you are thinking about running one.'

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxN7-3XnB6Y

Jeez, it makes it look like an ordeal of suffering.

I dont know about being motivational, its far better as a video to remind you why its worth training properly so that you can actually enjoy running a marathon!

And dont you just love the comment 'The 0.2 is the hardest part of the marathon'!! Erm, I dont think so.......it means you're very close to McFlurry time!!!:D:D:D

Was talking to my flatmates tennis partner last night and he did London in 08 - got a good time of 3:52 but admitted it put him off running and he didnt run for 7 months afterwards

He had never run over 16 miles in training and hit the wall soo badly - he went through 1/2 in 1:35 and had to basically stop the last four miles

He said afterwards he curled up in a ball on the mall and didnt move for 20 minutes - he looked astonished when I told him I walked home and went to NY the next day :p

It sounded like a right ordeal anyway!

McFlurry time?? KFC time for moi :p Well ok thats usually on the drive back home when travelling back the same day.

When quoting Fartlek sessions is it best to detail the session as warm up/down distances plus times then the ave pace for the whole fartlek or listing the actual fartlek sections?

No real problem for me as i have a spreadsheet that generates it all for me ;)

Also with intervals when they quote the times between intervals and sets of intervals is that standing still time or slw jogging time?

Interesting, but not at all surprising.

A body that hasn't trained beyond 16 miles is unlikely to get beyond 22 miles without having exhausted glycogen supplies.

Expecting to add 10 miles to your longest run in one fell swoop is nuts at the best of times so he can certainly be classed as under prepared.

Tbh With fartlek you dont need to record anything except the total distance covered. The idea is to take all the pressure off and run as you feel - just letting the body dictate how much fun it wants to have. There is inevitably a warm up period at the beginning and warm down at the end, but overall times or peak paces just dont matter.

When you get to formal intervals the 'rest' period is slow jogging if you're resting for 2 mins plus. For 1 min rests it tends to be a short amble!:D
