I thought that too but I've got a textured w/t almost identical to the one in E's pic and it cleans really easily and nothing sticks to the textured bits. (I figured if it wasn't practical then it was a good excuse to eat takeaway all the time and not use the kitchen but it didn't work out like that.)

I like that. But the wood worktops would be a no-no for me I'm afraid so I'd rather spend on good tops first.

see tomsmum i am so so like you..drive everyone mad and have to analise everything!! To the op..i love expensive looking things and although our house is a new build it is half and half and i would like the change some things in it after we have had our holiday..for me the worktops are something that i think the look is better than the effect if that makes sense..for example i like granite but would never have as one think they are pretty common and a nightmare to keep clean, we have a plain black laminate in ours and it is so so easy to wipe and leave, no smears and we have cut things on it at times..tut tut!! and it doesn't mark..to me that is better,,i love the wood effect ones too but not actual wood as again hard to keep and lots of people have them.
As for the stairs..gorgeous and without kids perect for me personally but glass a nightmare in general..i clean part time as one of my jobs and it never ever stays clean! again depends on the house and buyer..
Good luck with your house x0 -
Granite/stone worktopsThe glass on the stair case would actually put me off a house,if I didn't like the work tops I could eventually replace them but the stairwell would be an immediate job for me.
I would certainly go for the granite worktops as they wouldn't offend anyone.0 -
Granite/stone worktopsWe're just about to have black mirror quartz worktops fitted in our new kitchen so you know where my vote went
Our neighbours had their kitchen done with cheap worktops and said they've regretted it every day since- I know you won;t be living there but it is worth considering! Does depend what size house it is though really- Corian is very nice too!0 -
Granite/stone worktopsHas to be black granite for me. We spent £8k on granite for our kitchen and it was worth every penny. People always gush over our kitchen and I think the granite is a big factor.0

Granite/stone worktopsHi DG, It doesn't have to be the usual polished black granite -its nice but it is everywhere!
We sell lots of Silestone tops in the leather finish. Alternatively we have just fitted a new island display in our shop window using a slightly flame textured Antique Brown granite with a 60 mm down stand and 60mm mitred side panels, our granite company has done an excellent job with it, specially when you consider many granite fabricators wouldn't touch flame textured Antique Brown! Virtually everyone that comes into our shop is amazed by it and has to touch it and ask what it is.0 -
I was going to vote for glass balastrades, but I was picturing all metal and chrome, in a very open-living kind of house. If the stairs are in the living room, then the glass makes it feel much bigger and often lighter and brighter. My sister has glass balastrade and 2 young boys, and they never got that grubby. You usually keep your children away from stairs if they are young enough to put grubby sticky fingerprints all over the balastrade.
I'd love granite worktops, too.
I'm no help, I'd have to see the rest of the house.I refuse to enter a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent:rolleyes:0 -
Something else! Why not go for Corian worktops instead of granite, then you can still have the wow factor and have some money left over for the glass balustrading...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands
