Friend claimed he had 10mb BB but because the increase in speeds "hit a peak and would slow his connection down and trip out" -(or some techno BS similar to that) and he returned to 2MB with no problems .Now i though NTL were bullstting him -total nonsense
However i have also gone up fron 2mb to 10 mb- with Virgin - and i am having problems similar to his
It is nowhere 5 times as fast - -its as bad as dial up and i'm getting peed off as it is happening regularly- now every day- pages hang or freeze and i can only close by using task manger
I have cleared my temp net files. i have decluttered and defragged -No effect. There are no viruses or spyware detected
This has been going on for 6 months and Virgin are just offering very ABC solutions to what i think is a complex technical problem beyond my understanding .It is some sort of bandwidth /connection problem on their side or the router needs changing as it can't cope with higher speeds? Might be a DNS problem?
I am on win xp .moz ffox and using a webstar router
Even to get to this page took about 5 minutes -on 10mb -and this happens every day
A GOOD ONE

A BAD ONE -WHICH I GET OFTEN

Doesn't it say up to 10mb, use a speed checker site to test out your actual speed and don't forget some sites restrict the speed at which data is allowed to go out anyway

Edit, ah just noticed you did a speed check, I would also go with 4743hudsonj's suggestion.

MY POST SAID 6 MONTHS EVERY DAY REPEATEDLY -this is 100% NOT A TEMPORARY ATM PROBLEM
It is also 100% NOT a speed restrict or upto speed problem
    For what it's worth
My event viewer error logs are showing lots of these- i have googled but can't decode any of it - i don't know if it is related to my problem confused.gif

Reference error message: The referenced assembly is not installed on your
    system.
Event ID : 32 - Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC could not be found

Have you installed anything in the last six months as it looks like something is missing and that is why you are getting the entries in event viewer.

Either someone (or something) is hogging your bandwidth or you have people doing work on your IPS's end. I would contact your ISP about it, seems like their end.

It might be a good idea to try a different server.

I normally use Maidenhead on that site but after getting majorly fluctuating speeds (2.8 - 7.4 Mb/s) I contacted VM via the newsgroups. They said that there was no problem on their end, so I tried the London server and my speed came back 10Mb. It looks as if the server is having problems or being limited.

If your on a wireless router have you got it secured so no-one can connect unless they know the security key etc. A neighbour or someone could be using your internet without you knowing and downloading a load of stuff. Just a thought.

Also remember that Virgin media cut your speed at peak times if you download more than around 300mb. Mine drops from 10mb to around 3mb when downloading a lot.
    Comping again

I have contacted my ISP numerous times- now i have written a letter of complaint- which they acknowledged over a week ago - but have not replied to yet - probably thinking up of more patronising excuses.

    It is wired B/B
I am not downloading ANYTHING - this is a FAULT - Not a useage restriction

    How do i do that?

Have you tried logging straight into the router & checking the speed through that instead of using an external 3rd party speedtest?
You can't be lost if you don't know where you're going.

The problem is the 10MB is simply the maximum speed of your connection to Virgin Media. Virgin then have a much bigger connection to the internet itself, but it's certainly not 10MB x total number of VM customers, so at peak times you aren't going to see 10MB. Try it at some ungodly hour in the morning, like 5AM, or try it when there's a major football match on or something and you should see much better speeds.

I suspect half the problem is that since VM have been telling everyone they're getting upgraded, everyone is now trying to use the new speeds available to them, and thus they're using all the bandwidth.
