I think I might go in and ask for a laptop with a minimum P4 and 2gig ram, it will be easier to handle than my cumbersome pc, in that respect I am desperate :D:D

It's when you see something 'decent' offered and then the flurry of wanted postings asking for that very same thing because they weren't succesful!

But I have to agree that people are really rude when you offer stuff. I am not surprised that I have on the whole been successful when I have asked for things that have been posted, as I am always very polite and don't just say "I'll have that". Even when I offer stuff I state that preference will be given to courtesy over speed of response as often people are too quick trying to be first past the post, that manners just go out of the window.

The sob stories just make me laugh (and click delete), I offered a toaster and was surprised at the number of people who's toasters had blown up that morning - I should have got onto the local press!!! And the other one was when I offered some flooring and the number of people who's kitchens had flooded - quite simply, amazing!

I have asked if they could put in place a filter to ignore wanteds, but they said not.

If you are using yahoo mail then it is very easy to send the wanteds and offered to different folders using options/mail options/filters and then you can read either as and when you want. I would be very surprised if you couldn't filter similarly using other mail systems.

I have to say, I gave away a car on Freecycle and was pleasantly suprised by the reactions - I had braced myself for an inundation of rude, obnoxious emails - as I have had plenty in the past for much lower value items...

I chose the first reply that said please and thankyou, they hadn't included a sob story at all, and they were prompt and polite. They even brought the insurance certificate that they had already bought for the car (I gave them the reg no prior) to prove that they had insurance - I didn't really care, but it was nice to see. In the end, I threw in the 4 months remaining on the tax disc, I had planned to remove this.

And yes, it was a runner, fully taxed and MOT'd - but I couldn't sell it for love (and certainly not for money, as it turned out!) We were going away for 2 weeks and I wanted it off my driveway as I no longer had insurance for it. Freecycle came up trumps.

Turned out, the lady in question had been commuting 2 hours each way by bus, with a baby, to care for her father who had terminal cancer. This is in school hours, as she had 2 older ones at school. I know both the villages, and in fact we did have mutual friends - none of this had been brought up in the initial email - just a very polite and well mannered request.

That one transaction really restored my faith in freecycle, as did the elderly gentleman who was totally overjoyed to recieve a BROKEN garden shredder, as he liked to keep himself busy repairing things. OH thought I was pushing it a bit to offer broken electrical items, but someone was very pleased with it.

  • i have to disagree there are people out there who dont have luxerys like a computer or ds etc there is no harm in asking in my eyes i have lived on the streets before know and had nothing, my entire flat is filled with free things including my computer and i asked around. IF YOU DONT ASK YOU DONT GET. also as for parents asking for things for there children did you ever concider the fact that they could be very poor and want to give there children gifts or help them stop getting bullied at school cus of peer preasure. i think its wrong for anyone to critises others who may be genuine and asking for things this day an age there are very few people willing help others out. its very disapointing. and benefits dont pay you enough to live off its a joke.

Come off it. If you're living on the breadline, you should be doing all you can to survive. Not asking people for freebies that you don't need.

No one NEEDS a Wii or a conservatory (we've had requests for a conservatory three times in the last week). And if you need something to sit on, it does not have to be a cream leather suite.

Ask me for something you need, and I'll think about it, but I'm not going to fund your frivolities.
