Freecycle- people asking for too much?

I've also laughed at some of the requests.
Last year, I was moving house and 5 different people all stood me up when I was offering a nice wooden cabinet on the condition they collect it. So many people seemed to want it, I jokingly made a queue, and in the end 5 people promised to come but didn't.
When the removal man came, I asked him to leave it outside on the street. I walked past later (I only moved a few roads down), it had gone.0 -
Haven't been on Freecycle for ages. I have given away a Braun hand blender and an Epson Printer that needed attention.
I know what you mean though about people being greedy and asking for expensive items.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £26,322.670 -
It is amazing how many people are after washing machines and tumble dryers on ours each week.
Very recently somebody was looking for a particular make of handbag as they could not afford one. The type of bag they were after was worth over £100. Personally I think that should have been weeded out by the moderator.
I have recently joined freecycle in brisbane (australia) as we are going back to aus in a few months and it would cost us a fortune to take our pram over so on the look out for one that my parents could collect and have there for us. It is a really good group. Lots of good quality things being offered, no real begging e-mails seem to get approved and in the welcome e-mail I got it indicated you would be banned from the group for regular non collection. Probley something all freecycle goups should do.0 -
I have just joined as have a computer desk and a small table I want to get rid of.
What tips can you give me?
Also is it ok to tell them they need to remove from upstairs spare room as I wouldnt be able to get it downstairs very easily.0 -
I agree with Tincat. You are not forced to give stuff away, and i am always just glad that i can get rid of something i dont want or can't be bothered to sell. If the "wants" bother people they can just ignore them.
This thread reminds me of people who give money to beggars but insist that is to be used to buy food not booze- imo it is up to the recipient to do with what they wish...0 -

You're right Ada,
Screw Freecycle and the bunch of ebayers and bootfairers. In future all my stuff goes to a local charity shop. The man without a signature.0 -
I heard a guy on the radio once who needed shot of an old fridge. He called the council who said they'd collect it as rubbish at such-and-such a time. They didn't turn up and it sat outside for a week, so he stuck a sign to it saying "FriDGe - £30" and only had to wait a half-day for it to be nicked. Worth thinking about when you need shot of something!0

I cant say I have ever used Freecycle, I did sign up a few years back, but got so fed up with the mountain of emails that I abruptly signed off the site.
It has to be said the old saying "If you don't ask, you don't get" , or "nothing ventured, nothing gained".
I would agree its sheer cheek to blatantly ask for a 40" LCD with HD as a freebie. But imagine if such a nerve was rewarded with a 40" LCD with HDRequests would very soon come flooding in.

You don't have to receive emails from freecycle - I just go in and look when I feel like it.
I have asked if they could put in place a filter to ignore wanteds, but they said not.
(The desperately wanteds get me - if you were genuinely desperate you could surely come up with a better plan than asking on freecycle!)0 -
one women just asked for a xbox 360, a ds and a 3g phone for her son :rolleyes:0
