If only you had Office 2007 - download the trial, wack your legit key in, and within 30 seconds (and a few "I accepts") and you've got the version you want.

That's because MS Works and MS Word are not the same program. Resave your docs as RTF files and then reopen in Works.

Oh. I thought that there'd be at least some degree of compatability there since most new computers only come with works. So Microsoft can't even do that right!

I have microsoft office word 2003 files on my pen drive but when I plug my pen into my netbook with works word on it, it shows the files as wordpad files which they never have been. Whether I then open with words word processor or wordpad the document is all over the place.

    Arghhhh!!

Just download open office for free on the netbook and change your settings so that open office opens files ending .doc rather than works word. If you want to write something on the netbook and then transfer it to a PC with MS word on, just save the Open Office writer file as a .doc rather than .odt (using 'save as').

If they did that, why would anyone buy Word? Word has never been a 'inclusive' program, unlike Outlook Express or Explorer.
They're perfectly compatible, you just need to convert .doc to .rtf. Much better in fact to always save Word docs that way, then anyone can open them in any word processing package.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

But then MS would essentially be giving away Office for free!

Not really, because what's the point of even making Works if it isn't compatible with word? Surely they could just abandon it and install nothing on the computer to begin with. I'd have thought that if they wanted to install works on new computers, they'd at least make sure it could open word documents!

You would still only be able to View, print and copy Word documents. Works is a totally different office suite.

But that's what the OP's problem is all about. When it is opened in Works, all the formatting is lost and the documents don't make sense.

Works isn't bundled with any OS - the OEM copy of Works is around £3, and the manufacturers bundle it in as "Microsoft office package included".

Either way i'd rather pay the £60 and use Office than use OpenOffice though :X
