If you have a network connection download Open Office, its free so no license issues.

Writer also reads and writes morosoft .doc files.

This is exactly what I have done.

I have MS Word on my main pc and Open Office on my netbook. OE works with all MS files, is free and easily installed.

An Office lincense says in the small print that you can also install it on your laptop in addition to the desktop but only for personal use -noone else should touch it.

Meaning, you can use the same license key for both laptop and PC.

Could try and use the desktop CD drive over a network somehow?

I believe you can import some MS Word files into Google Docs. That would save you having to install anything, and you could access your files from anywhere.

Yes, on student media you get two licences for use on two computers, I'm not too sure how true this is for retail, I have a funny feeling you get just the one.

It's quite easy to share an optical drive over a network, same as sharing folders.

    1) Netbooks aren't the most powerful computers in the world, they are designed to be small and efficient. Attempting to run a heavyweight application like Office / Word on there would be like trying to use a Vauxhall Corsa to transport a pallet of bricks
Nonsense - my Atom NC10 runs word (and excel, and Chrome multiple times side by side) fine, even my older eee 701 with the 600 MHz Celeron could just about run Word 2007 fine.

Thanks for your help, tbh I don't understand a lot of it lol. I have used open office but still had problems with ms word docs they would be a bit jumbled when opened.
I will take netbook into school tomorrow and see if I can borrow a drive.

I can't see my netbook having a problem running it, it is a mini 10 atom Z530 1.6ghz with 1gb ram and 160g hd - this should be ok shouldn't it.

If the Word docs are resaved as .rtf's, they should be fine when opened in Open Office.
Netbook should run MS Ofice just fine.
