Locking 3 phones to GSM

Does anyone know which phones this can be done with?
I live and work at the edge of decent 3 coverage and have done this with a Nokia (using some additional software) but now need to look at a new 3 phone and all deals seem to be LG models.
Can LG phones be locked onto GSM signals (as opposed to auto or CDMA)?
I do understand that 3 do not appreciate customers doing this but I have scoured the T&C for anything which prohibits it and can't find anything. I'll take my chances.

Thanks but I simply want to find out if this is possible with LG handsets, I don't need advice on what three will do because I am doing this already (or was until my phone was stolen). If I move into an area of good three coverage I do try and remember to switch my phone to CDMA so not all my calls are on GSM. Until three's coverage improves where I live I have no choice but to do this.
Do you know if LG handsets be set to GSM only?0 -
not if it's a '3' handset, as they have disabled the function to prevent people from doing just that0

And I realised that this was probably the case, I want to know if it is possible to either re-enable the function or use a different method to change the setting (as with Nokias where you can install a test suite which allows the setting to be changed without using the menus).0 -
maybe you could get the phone changed to the generic software in a phone shop. don't know if this is possible with LG phones and how much it would cost though0
