I have an unlocked samsung D500 with an orange contract coming due for renewal (which i wont) and i'm looking for a cheap (preferably free via cashback) contract to replace it.

I haven't used 3 before but they got some good deals, will their simcard work in an unlocked phone, my ex had a 3 contract and her 3 sim wouldnt work in another 3 phone for some reason.

Anyone clued up on this? cheers

3g sims only work in very few non 3g handsets. The only one I know of is a nokia 3220, there are a few other old handsets that support 3g sims as well but don't know which ones. It definately wont work in a D500 though

My son recently broke his NEC phone that came as part of his '3' contract and the 3 sim wouldn't work in anything else I had the house, even old unlocked Nokia's. I had to buy a cheap 3 phone from ebay in the end which was a bit of a nuisance.

  • Dear All :)

I have the Three contract. I also have the Nokia 3220 (unlocked I think its been flashed with the cable to unlock).

So, I tried to test 3 sim in Nokia 3220 and found out signal is much more better than my NEC e338. So, I'm happy and use the 3 sim in it. I made a call of nearly 1 hour and its still fine. However, after that I made a call and after nearly 5 minutes Nokia 3220 was automatically turned off. I tried to switch on by using the button, but it won't work. So, I removed the batttery and turned on again and then its fine (still 3 sim inside the phone). After that, I made a call again and the same nearly afer 5 mins the phone went off.

At first, I thought its the problem with my Nokia. I also put my friend 3 sim inside my Nokia, but didn't made a call. After two days, both me and my friend got a message from Three network and saying we both are in breach of the T&Cs of 5.3 & 6.4(a). We got the message from 3505. After that, my friend sim was suspended and then he made a call and they cleared it.

So, 3 sim is solely the property of Three. When u read their T&Cs they said they won't take any responsibility for the damage of the phone.
  • I have a Nokia 6270 which isnt locked to any network and is not a 3 handset and my 3sim (contarct) works fine in it,,,only thing is I cant use some of the features that the 3 network provide,,,ie mobile websites.
But like mentioned before,,,it is actually breaking 3 T&C's by using a non 3 handset so shhh dont tell em if u find one that works...think its trial and error

A 3 SIM should work ok in any 3G phone that is either locked to 3 or unlocked. Using a 3 SIM in a non 3G phone is against their T&C's and as No Name On The Net said, they can suspend your account.

I read somewhere that putting a 3g sim into a 2g phone "can" cause permanent damage to the phone.

    Anyone else heard/ experienced this?
