Diamonds, I think you are going a tad off track here. My point is why use the phone to make VOIP calls when you can just do it from the laptop if you're at home, or use something like 18185 to make the calls direct from your telephone which would cost less than VOIP rates and even free to some countries?

The only reason I would have WIFI would be internet whilst not at home. i.e. at a friends home or a hotel with free WIFI. Anywhere else is going to cost you money, unless you subscribe to a service like "The Cloud" for WIFI access. and if you have to pay, you may as well get the web bolt-on which would allow more freedom of movement where WIFI is not available to remain connected.

Hey, because free wifi when out and about saves £££'s using voip applications ;)

Ran out of X-net mins ? its cheaper to use voip than out of priceplan plan rates

I have Wi-fi on my phone, Nokia E63.

Yes you can use your wi-fi without it coming out of your allowance, although I am with 3.

You just go to the connectivity bit of the phone, use the wizard if it has one.. This will find all the available networks in the same way as your laptop will. Then as with the laptop, you enter the code provided with the modem if it is locked.

Then, when you go on line you have the option to go with your provider or use the Wi-fi connection... Even at home this can come in handy for when the mobile provider is experiencing problems, and to download large files like security so you are not going over any limits.

Reeves - Personally speaking I think you should aim to get web bolt-on if you are planning on moving onto contract. It makes your phone more MOBILE and less restrictive to WIFI hotspots. There are some free ones about but normally not where you need them. Plus why would you want to hook it up to your home wifi? it doesn't make logical sense if you already have laptop access in the house which gives you better internet experience. Unless you're planning on doing some light surfing whilst visiting the John. ;)

Never wanted to start a big debate about voip calling ... just not always able to surf using the home pc due to ebaywife NOT for bog literature lol ... would also be usefull for "wifi hotspots" out and about ... just thinking on how to keep the data usage down that's all ... but thanks for the replies anyway.

also now seen there may be possible iphone price reductions so might hold back and see how this develops ...

Read the O2 Retentions thread - things seem to slowed down at the moment, perhaps because of an impending new iPhone they want to steer people towards, but if offers go back like before you'd have a good chance of a Nokia 5800 for £20 a month including a web bolt-on.

Oh, and in case anyone was actually interested in network tariffs to Australian mobiles, diamonds seems to have overlooked that O2 ITS is cheapest at 30p. But some payg SIMs have cheaper calls. Personally, I'd use one of three other methods for under 4p.
