    Hi All

Just to give my two-penn’orth on the whole support group issue! As I am sure I have mentioned before, my DS is autistic. It wasn’t mentioned as a possibility until he was 2 (this is quite normal with ASD, so I understand) so there is nothing really for me to comment on from when he was a baby.

Support groups can be very helpful, as can specialist provision – DS went to Special Needs Nursery and got priority for a place at the main Nursery School in our town, but went to a mainstream school and he is still in mainstream. I have to say, the most important things for DS were (a) getting a statement of special needs early enough (beginning of 2nd term at primary school) – without it he would never have coped with mainstream schooling at that time (b) getting the diagnosis!

There was a support group running locally, which I did attend on a few occasions (when they were running the dates nearly always clashed with something else, plus I had transport difficulties and not a lot of money to pay for transport in the first place!) and I did find it very helpful. There was none of the ‘woe is me’ – quite the opposite!

Also, and I am sure I am not alone in this, I never liked Parent and Toddler – I tried several and had the same problems with all of them! I found them very cliquey, no-one would talk to me and in any case, I spent nearly the whole time chasing after DS as he needed constant close supervision to keep him out of trouble – very very stressful!

Support groups can be good but I don’t see the point in forcing people to go! If there is support available for when you feel you need it, then great, but surely the point is to provide support for parents for when they decide they want it – not for ‘outsiders’ to decide.

Personally, but this is just typical of me, I have just read anything and everything I could get my hands on about autism. As I currently work at a University, I am in a very good position to be able to do this, as I have access to the Main Library and also, more importantly, the Education Library. If anyone else does this, just a word of warning – some of it is good and some of it isn’t!

Children are children – they all have their own little quirks and they all have different personalities, whether they are ‘normal’ or not. At the same time, parents are parents and we all just do what we feel is best for ourselves and our children and at a time when we feel it is right to do so. Little Adam is only 6 weeks old, for heaven’s sake! Can’t Mummy just be left alone to enjoy her baby!

Oh, and as Columbo would say, just one more thing – there is nothing at all wrong in asking for help if you need it. Unfortunately I had my Dad continually telling me that I shouldn’t need any help and that I should do everything and there was something wrong with me if I decided that DS would benefit from specialist provision. I also had him telling me that DS’s condition shouldn’t be used as an ‘excuse’ (for what exactly?!) and not accepting that there was anything ‘wrong’ with him. Grrrrr! If you get any of that (less likely with Downs than ASD, I admit) ignore it because it is b*ll**ks!!

Phew! That was an epic! I didn’t plan to ramble on so long, but it is something very dear to my heart as you can probably imagine!

    Big hugs to all! :grouphug:

:rotfl::rotfl:im glad im not the only one who has this problem. Our cat will even go so far as to try and hook her paw over the bowl to get some milk.
A few weeks ago she actually stole a piece of chicken off OHs dinner plate :rotfl: needless to say he didnt find it quite so amusing.

:rotfl:Oh tell me about it - my male cat likes to try and drink the milk whilst I'm still eating.

All three of them wait at my feet when I'm cooking (or eating) in case I drop something good! Hmm I must be messy, they don't do it to OH. We actually had to change our bin from a touch one to a pedal bin cos they figured out the touch part and took to raiding the bin for snacks.

Afternoon all, hopoe you all had a lovely weekend.
50p to pad ac for me
Money is a bit tight till OH gets paid at end of week.
Just have e-mail from egg offering me balance transfer at fixed rate of 2.9% and not sure what to do. I can transfer £2000 of my £5950 loan on to it and i know i'll save money tho i dont know how much or how to work it out. I would then be able to concentrate on my loan as that has the higher apr%. Is it a good idea to do the transfer?

    hi nickynoo,

check on your loan astatement, i know my halifax loan - even if i pay off chunks, i still have to pay the total interest calculated at the beginning of the loan UNLESS I pay it off in one lump sum - then the "settlement" figure is without all the interest. - hope that helps.

Only 60p today, rounding bank account.

Does anybody else have a nationwide credit card? I have just received my statement for them and have arranged the direct debit, which is to be taken on 26th July - this is not ideal for me because its late in the month, they have told me if I contact them in between this date and next statement, they will be able to change it. I have however noticed on the statement it says the direct debit will be taken on 26th less any interim payments...does that mean if I pay min amount now, they will not take direct debit at end of month? I don't want to pay some off and then find out they still take direct debit and I don't have enough!! Sorry I know I am rambling a bit!! ;)
