Surely it would be very unlikely that someone coming from a distance could be that precise? I've collected lots of Ebay buys and never been more exact than "late morning". I'd be hopping mad if "collection only" was interpreted as meaning "collection only by the buyer".

I guess it depends on where your coming from if you local then precise should be to much of a problem and to be honest if im travelling a fair distance I use satnav and that will tell me how far away it is bar any traffic.

If you ain't got a satnav then google maps does the same thing.

Also the buyer can always ring the seller if there going to be late where as your never get a courier driver ringing up and saying ill be there in 10 mins as im just finishing of my lunch.

it's swings and roundabouts really, i've waited around all day for buyers who turn up when it suits them, i've even had one chap arrive un announced at 6.30 on a sunday morning, fortunately i am up at this time anyway to milk cows but i doubt many people would have been too happy with this.

I often arrange for couriers to collect items from a third party, but then i know what i'm doing and liase closely with the seller to make sure it suits them and they are not inconvenienced, OTOH you could end up with a nightmare like SteveW did if the buyer is a muppet.

which is why i would say that when selling, if it's possible to arrange postage for an item, then offer postage on it, it will greatly increase your chance of selling at a decent price and YOU will have control of the postage process so will know when the courier is coming and will know it's been organised properly.

I here what your saying but when the buyer suggests a time that I can make I do give them a bit of lead way as you cant expect them to be there bang on time although I also make it quite clear if your not there within an hour of the agreed time and haven't let me know then don't expect me to be in when you arrive.

I agree with arranging postage if you can but there will always be times where its not possible like say with furniture

Agreed, i just think it's best to offer postage where possible. i've sold plenty of stuff where postage simply isn't an option, and can trump anyone with the nightmare 'collection in person' story.

I sold a combine harvester on ebay, and some lithuanians turned up to collect it with an articulated lorry with a standard curtain side body, and no ramps, (obviously the combine was much wider and taller than the lorry they wanted to fit it inside) they wanted to cut the top of the lorry body in my yard, and then somehow drive the combine into it and then weld the top back on again before driving off.

Makes putting a guitar in a cardboard box with some bubble wrap look like a straight forward job, really.

Sorry but I cant help but laugh at that.

Luckily for me everything I have collected or had people turn up for has gone fine.

You only get one chance at a mutual withdrawl or NPB dispute, and from what you've said the buyer seems to have paid via Paypal so you will not win a NPB dispute. Ebay won't refund your fees under those circumstances I'm afraid, so you're going to have to take it on the chin or allow the buyer to arrange a courier.

Unfortunately even listings that are "Collection Only" are required to offer Paypal, and obviously you were hoping to get a buyer who would pay cash on collection. You should seriously consider whether ebay is the best venue to sell your item, as there is no way that you can definitively protect yourself from someone who is determined to scam you who pays via Paypal.

Very good points. ebay insist that sellers accept paypal for collection only items, even though this leaves them wide open to fraud by the dishonest.

The OP listed it as cash on collection only - I doubt if any courier is going to meet that requirement whatever time they turn up.

Then the op was in breach of ebay's rules, which state that pay pal must be offered on all listings.
