Have been out shopping today for the first time in ages due to slipped disc.
What a saddo I am! Haven't bought a thing but had a lovely time trying on lots of sparkly party dresses and masses of shoes. Recommend it! You get the pleasure without having to part with any cash and you have this secret thrill at outwitting the big advertising/marketing boys-you can sniff the bait but not swallow the hook.
    :rotfl:
And has anybody else noticed what a load of rubbish the shops are trying to force on us for Christmas? It really opens your eyes on a DMP to the hype and overpriced c**p they try and force on us.
I feel sorry for you younger ones with families but hold firm against the adverts and peer pressure. They won't remember 2 months after Christmas what they had but they will remember for a lifetime the love and warmth of the family.
  • Hey Twit Head! Glad to hear the back is much better!
Like you, I'm sort of dreading Christmas, OH is due a back-dated payrise (about £300) which we were hoping to get end Nov. Now it looks like the New Year so I might have to borrow funds from my Dad. I really hate to ask him, and I pay back every penny he ever lent me, but with 13 neices and nephews, all wee kids, I can't see any other way. I'm just relieved that we entertained the in laws last year and it's not our turn! Isn't that bad?
I would love to hear if anyone has had any brainwaves re; Xmas, certainly can't jeopardise the DMP so early in!

Thank you bailey for clarifying that, the last thing I want to do is upset anyone on here. We have all been through hell with these debts & obviously some are still going through all the different processes now.

I only brought it up because I was getting really worried that people reading through who didn't really understand DMP's & are too afraid to post or speak to anyone would think it ok to empty an account (be it an overdraft or remainder on a credit card etc) & then try to put that on a DMP. Of course its entirely possible that person could get away with doing that, but someone else might find themselves up on a charge of getting money by deception (or some other terminology).

In my case I had an overdraft of £800 with Nationwide & because it went slightly over on a couple of occasions (by two or three pounds) they decided to withdraw it completely. How can anyone repay £800 just like that especially if they needed an overdraft in the first place, anyway I was being hit with £300-£350 charges each month for something they caused. Thankfully I have since got all my money back from them through the hardship route & that debt is cleared (they won't remove the default though, although it does say satisfied).

I can also understand all those who are having problems with their OH's. All this debt stuff was left to me, including dealing with all the threatening calls & letters. I even had to do all the court stuff alone & it was very tuff. It seems one person takes on the responsibility & the other carries on like nothings wrong.

Geoff, I'm so sorry you have had to deal with all this on your own. Especially court stuff, that must have been terrifying, the calls are bad enough.
Your OH is a very lucky lady, just think, if you turned all this drive and determination into business, you would be like Bill Gates by now!!
Where would we all be on here without you?

Just been reading through the last few pages of posts from lots of newbies. It's heartrending to learn of your troubles, rows etc. Only thing I can advise is grit your teeth, stay focused, talk to each other, be very organised and keep every scrap of paperwork.
You need a completely different mindset to live on a DMP and that takes a while to acquire. You are NOT a victim you are going to try your hardest to fulfill your obligations. After a while you find your whole financial outlook changes. You may feel apart from others with lots of dosh to splash around but I think if we are all honest we feel a little secret disdain that we can live on what they would sneer at. And always there is the light at the end of our particular tunnel (be it ever so far away) - the day we are debt free and will never be sucked into the credit vortex again. Maybe our DMP motto should be 'Live Long And Prosper' :)

Don't buy for thirteen nieces and nephews-you can't afford it! (No offence intended) Get the family together early and talk about your situation. Be brave and 'Come out' re:your finances. Agree to buy one fixed price present per family or even better swap time/things instead of monetary gifts. Can you offer to babysit said offspring in return for fixing drippping taps or whatever? How about a lovely party evening where every family brings some food/wine and the silliest present they could find for under £5-00? Are you creative? Can you bake/make stuff? PLEASE don't get sucked into the Christmas mayhem!!! It's all about that lovely fuzzy feeling of being at peace and seeing your loved ones near you - not buying some overpriced rubbish- I may not be the greatest financial whizz but trust me on this one!
  • Finally spoke to Halifax today (small matter of £36k of debt etc) they asked me to pay, today, if you please, the £380 we owed them. Pause for a quick feel down the back of the sofa, Kudox style, results: nada. Anyway, told them the long story, blah, blah, and the lady, who had been frostier than a polar bears cold bits, was really nice. She even agreed that it was mean to still have us in "Collections" when we are paying more than original amount! Makes that 3 for £10 wine in Tesco even better. Doesn't cheap booze rock? I've only had one glass! But the night is young - have a good night everyone! x

I'm on the rubbish sherry at the moment but strongly thinking of going out on my broomstick later trick or treating. Free chocolate = free food!!!

Thats right! Our only child is nearly 22 and at Uni (he's sitting here serenading me with his guitar, God, I love Led Zeppelin! ) and last year I was really cross when I got the speech from the "aunties and uncles" that as he's grown up now and they would only send him a "token" for Xmas.
Yes, that's fair enough, but they are happy for us to fork out for their lot!!
He doesn't need their money anyway, he works hard enough, both in the "real world" and paying his own way through Uni.
Rant over! Thanks for that. No way am I sucked into the Christmas mayhem! ( Now be a good boy and get Mummy another glass of wine (ha ha!)

Jeez don't let me drink with those leprechauns again - that's not good for a wee fairy like me!!:rotfl:Seeing you are on your broomstick anyway, would it work if you stood outside Threshers later and said " Alohamora". You never know!
