I'll never forget travelling with my Mum and driving a long distance, seeing a pub on the side of the road we popped in to have a quick wee. Normally we would like to give some patronage but didn't have the time to stop and have a coffee. Seeing a quiz machine or something similar we thought we'd have a quick play to put some money in and have a quick rest... Some man started shouting at us, about how we were nobodies who only wanted the loo, and now we could win all the money when people had put a load of cash in the machine... We just ran away as quick as we could!!ARRRGH!)

Actually, in your position I would have bought a drink even if I didn't want it and in the past I have done just that. I think it's only fair, really

"Here's two pounds. 2 lemonades please. Not going to drink it. Bye!"

I think I'd be more embarrassed about that than running away after a pee! As discussed, we did at the time, think we were giving our patronage back in some way, however misguided we were. I would also like to point out that we knew our chances of winning any money on this machine was a good zero! :D

    Some people are complete loons!

50 p to have a pee!!! What a joke!! (Anyone else get as cross as I do at train stations when they charge you... ARRRGH!)

But did you have the good manners to ask if you could use the loo? If you did (and the answer was 'yes') it was sod all to do with the bloke who shouted at you.

In Covent Garden, my niece (aged 8) suddenly decided she was desperate to go to the toilet so we popped into the nearest pub and asked the guy serving if we could use the loo.
He checked with his boss, said 'no problem', we used the toilet and my niece very politely made a point of saying 'Thank you' to him as we left.

Just a thought - what would you have done if you'd dropped the jackpot on the machine?

Buying a couple of lemonades without drinking them would be a lot less embarrassing than being shouted at and shown up by the publican, in my book. To my mind, it's only fair: the cost of providing the lavs keeping them clean is part of the overheads, so has a cost to the business. I doubt the profit of a couple of goes on the gaming-machine would recompense the publican, quite honestly

I thought it was bad enough that Waterloo station in London charges 30p for use of the toilets.

i have found that a lot of railway stations now charge 30p.

what do you do if you dont have 30p?

I'd much rather go into our local public toilets and pay 20p as they're spotlessly clean. Probably because they're not used much because people don't want to pay 20p! Saying that, the one's at Aberdeen beach are free now, and they're still very clean.

But it is a bit mean not letting a child who's bursting, go into the loo.

No I didn't have the manners to ask if I could use the loo, I'm not talking a city centre where there's a multitude of toilets to pick from, it was a rural pub and the only thing for miles and I'm sorry but I personally wouldn't risk them saying no. Aint no way I'm peeing in bushes in daylight at the side of the road. I've used the toilets in many places before I purchase anything, I wouldn't ask permission to use the toilet if I was going to give them some money afterwards.

We were going to have a very quick drink, but saw the machine and decided that would be an alternative, I don't know whether pubs get the revenue from the machines, but at the time we guessed they did.

And what would I have done if we won? Looked into the sky to see some flying pigs. I think that's the only time we've ever played on one of those machines, and I know there's a "system" on how you win it, or at least a lot of practice would help. It was merely to be a couple of minutes relief from driving before we travelled off again.

Let me reiterate, as much as I would hate to pee in the woods, I would equally be shamefaced to walk into a pub and run out again without buying anything - we decided against sitting down and having a few sips on a drink because we saw the machine as an alternative, I wouldn't give them a "pound for the inconvienence" of using the loo.

Cripes, we were intending to have a drink, I saw the machine and said "lets do this instead" as I honestly thought it would be an equivelant and I was no more expecting to win than to pick up a £50 outside on the road.

And if we had, miraculously won? (Aside from the question of how) I'm pretty sure we would have left money to buy the people in there a drink, and then !!!!!!ed off.

I really didn't think we'd be accused of stealing, I just thought it would be a better alternative to a drink in our situation.... Has this made sense now?

Fine, I'm glad you're aware of the revenues the pub gets from a quiz machine, I had no idea and would never do it since anyhow.
