Liverpool

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8084182.stm
The parent company of Liverpool FC, owned by Tom Hicks and George Gillett, lost £42.6m in the year to August 2008.
The loss was mainly due to the £36m of interest payments that Kop Football Holdings had to make to service the debt taken on to buy the club.

Man Utd and Ars**al also have substantial debts.

I hope the obscene amount of money in football goes over the next few years. Let's see how many members of the Saudi/Kuwaiti/Dubai royal family "support" English clubs when they realise there's limited money to be made.
All this money is killing the whole romance of football.

United have debt because they transferred share capital into debt, a well run profitable company, hence the latest sponsor deal, until then US govt (or whoever) can cough up over the next 12 months icon7.gif

Try watching lower leagues, conference, unibond etc - there's still plenty of football worth watching without contributing to the Premier League's vast payroll (still I suppose the tax take helps the exchequer).

Football is about much more than Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool & Arsenal.

If you look at the figures, Everton are probably the best run club in the premier league at the moment. A model other clubs may wish to aspire to.

Be interesting to observe the impact this has on Liverpool, after all Southamptons parent company went into administration. If the same happened to Liverpool, I wonder if they'd lose the 10 points?

All that has to happen is for one of the big 4 not to get into the champions league & we could have another leeds on our hands...& I don't think this is far off.

I believe Arsenal are struggling after deciding to build then sell property on their Highbury site, & the crunch has affected this.
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Agreed! Man Utd pay £60M per year in interest for the privilege of the Glazers buying their club. I have no empathy with MUFC at all, but I can see how this is wrong.
Even Abramovitch who owns Chelsea has given them an interest free loan for over £500M. He hasnt given them his money, simply loaned it. If he wanted out CFC (and its new owner) would be liable for that debt.
Everton are lucky in some ways that their chairman is a true fan and not likely "to do a runner" when things gets tough.

I think Abramovich converted some or all of the loan into equity so the club no longer owes him much of that cash.

No chance they would sell for at least £300M to Saudi if they were any where near close.

Abramovich has never been clear as to whether the money he has passed to Chelsea is a loan, or gift. This could put chelsea on a very sticky wicket if he gets bored. I believe the figure is closer to £700 million. Scarey!

What was also interesting was looking at the top 5 of indebted clubs, the big 4 were 4 of them. The other being Newcastle (lord knows what'll happen there now!)

I also look at some of the other figures and find myself wondering how on earth clubs like Portsmouth etc are creating some of the income they do.

Bolton appear to be making a small fortune from their hotel/commercial enterprise, cornering the market for the locality in which they are.

Not sure I agree with this. They're not exactly friends with each other, so difficult to tell. And I'd expect any potential buyer to play a real hard game of hardball to purchase Liverpool with the state they're currently in.
