I used to work for HSBC and I know that if staff get caught doing that-it is gross misconduct-only certain people can authorise this and frontline staff cannot unless it is a dire emergency-and even then it's gotta be a fantastic reason! I cannot just be done as standard-although I do acknowledge it can be physically done, it shouldn't be common practice!Loan-£3600 only 24 months of payments to go!!!
All debt consolodated and cards destroyed!!

Why should they pay to have a system put in when the current system works fine? I don't tend to take huge amounts out of my current account without knowing in the morning, so it's not really an issue to take the cheque book with me!
Erm, because it blatently doesn't work 'fine' because:
a) some people still need to get large cash amounts out over the counter
b) who carries their chequebook around with them nowadays
c) HSBC have been persauding lots of people to 'upgrade' to their green accounts, which do not issue chequebooks. So what are these customers supposed to do?0 -

Take your card to the counter, if you've made your maximum atm withdrawal limit, they will give you more at the counter (obviously within reason, you could just walk in and ask for 10k!)0 -
Probably a bit away from the question, but when I bought my last car at a dealer on a Saturday, they took payment by debit card. IIRC they contacted their bank, which in turn contacted mine, in turn they spoke to me with security questions. All dome and dusted!0

But that's exactly the problem - HSBC, almost uniquely, don't allow this. Instead, all withdrawals at the counter above card ATM withdrawl limits must be accompanied with a cheque. So customers with green accounts can't use this facility, nor can anyone who happens to have lost/forgotten their chequebook.0 -

Don't worry, I believe they can just...ShelfStacker wrote: »[C]all telephone banking then so long as you're not on a Basic Bank Account or Passport (holders of which don't have access to counter withdrawals) they can order you a mixed credit book, with withdrawal slips at the back. Or, if you don't want to plan better, there are other ways of doing things.
And other interesting excerpts:sarah_elton wrote: »I had the necessary ID on me to transfer almost £12k out of my account, but they still wouldn't give me £800 cash. Apparently the cash withdrawal process changed to add more security.
I could understand the limits being different previously, but considering "account hijack" fraud is on the up and up, letting third party transfers be any easier to accomplish than a cash withdrawal is just dumb. What would William Shatner do?0 -

That's incorrect.
Go to the counter with your card and driving licence or passport.
I've done it myself.0 -

hmmmmmmmmmmm
And what does that matter or have to do with anything? You keep bleating on about private banking - bully for you! Obviously you aren't that rich or you'd be way too busy to bother with scroats like us on a forum
Andy has a lot of standing on here, more than you my friend. Bleating about private banking will not earn you friends, tell us once - thats enough thanks. Now we know, tell us who you use for PB? Is it Natwest by any chance, i.e. the one anyone can get if the price is right?
Coutts/HSBC Premier will impress me otherwise drop the act.... :rotfl:
Back to the subject matter, it is possible in exceptional circumstances for a branch to allow you to take funds out using your card. I too have done it myself, with HSBC (last week actually). My situation however, its a small place I live and I actually know the staff there. Not sure if that helped but they did let me withdraw £500 over the counter (in addition to the grand I took from hole in wall).
Yes, we all know HSBC like their voucher-based-system but if you're stuck they have a duty to ensure you can withdraw funds, even if it was a tenner to get home, they do have this duty and so long as you pass verification and have ID they will always allow over the counter withdrawals. If they say no, simply complain to the relevant bodies and close the account down.
Regards to the statement about withdrawal limits, I went into branch and asked. She came back after a chat with someone in the back and said yes, no problem. I guess this tallies then, she went and asked her boss I bet?
My limit is £1000 per day. Obviously I can't spend that amount daily (would if I had it like lol)....2010 - year of the troll

well I assure you that you are wrong - talking as a current customer, not private either! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
To prove this fact - here: #823 From the horses mouth, so to speak (i.e. an HSBC employee).EASTERNTHUNDERUK wrote: »factually not correct, i suggest you check the terms and conditions of all HSBC accounts accurately, despite what you say you will find that they WILL NOT allow over 1k im afraid.
Yes you can - see my post above! If you give any bank notice they must agree to any size of withdrawl so long as they are happy with the ID you provide. Say I won the lotto and told my bank, in 11 days I need £200k in £20 notes. Trust me, they'd give me it over the counter. You know why? Cos it'd be against the law to say no!2010 - year of the troll
