Ending of Vodafone contract

Hi

I am on a 12 month Vodafone contract which I think is due to end this month.
Do I have to do anything to terminate things or will it be done automatically, eg blocking of the sim or whatever.

I do not want direct debits to continue going out at the end of the contract period.

Do I need to contact Vodafone or anything?

You will have to ring up Voda and give them 30 days notice. Request a PAC code (Transfering number to a diffrent network). Once that is done and they have taken the last bill then you can cancel the direct debit. :)

    Hi

Would it not be easier just to get a PAYG sim from Vodafone?
So I have to give 30 days notice, ugh that's another £40.

^ Yup thats the only way. When you do, try to recored the conversation or if you need to send a letter make sure you have sent it as Recorded Delivery. ;)

You can get a PAYG sim now if you want. But you still have to go through that process.

I was in the same position as you, contract coming to an end, not wanting to stay a day longer with VF longer than the contract.

VF CS will tell you that you must write to them 30 days before the expiry of the contract but the T&C state that you muust advise of cancellation a 'minimum' of thirty days. I argued this and sent a letter recorded delivery giving notice of cancellation of the contract TEN weeks before the contract expired. Yes, I was that desperate to get away. I followed it up a week later and asked for confirmation, which I received by e-mail.

Sometimes you can use the T&C at your advantage, but not very often as they are worded 99.9999% in favour of the networks.

    Not quite.

30 days notice and a Pac code work differently.

30 days notice is that , the 30 days expire and the contract ceases.

A PAC code is a code that can be used to migrate a number, and is valid 30 days, requesting a PAC code DOES NOT initiate the 30 days notice period. That is only started then the Telco recieve the port request with the valid PAC code from the other network.

If you request a PAC code and do not use it in time the existing contract rolls on and does not get cancelled.

Contracts do not terminate after 12 months, they just go on to a rolling month by month basis, the 12 months is just the minimum term before you can cancel.

You would be best advised to leave your direct debit as it is, cancel the contract and after you have confirmed the last bill has gone out of your bank account cancel it at the bank. Doing it before may end up costing you more for paying by a non DD method, or you'll get chased for the final bill.

    This is incorrect.

The notice period does not start when the PAC is received by the recipient service provider. The notice period commences when the donor service provider issues the PAC.

This incorrect information has also been posted in the Leaving Orange! thread.

    That does not make sense.

If you request a PAC code but don't use it the contract will continue if no transfer request is received by your current network, even if you've previously given notice. A PAC ruest IS NOT your 30 days notice.

A request from the new network to transfer your number represents a notice to terminate your existing subscription with your current network, and thats your 30 days notice, or you'll get charged 30 days in lieu of notice.

    Correct.

Correct. The notice period begins when it is issued.

Incorrect. As previosuly stated the notice period begins whne the PAC is issued by the donor SP and not when the recipient SP receives it.

As per Ofcom's guide to MNP:
For the purpose of determining your obligations with regard to giving notice, the contract termination notice period is taken to commence on the date of issue of the PAC.

I'm also with Vodafone. My 18 month monthly contract ends on the 2 July. Just rang Vodafone to request my PAC and I was told I have to do this by letter.

I'm slightly confused, do I have to give 30 days notice and request a PAC?

What happens if I don't find a new provider in time, the service will terminate and I'll lose my number?

The worst part is on the Vodafone website in their FAQs; they suggest when moving to Vodafone that you should be able to get a PAC by phone from your current provider. Yet they insist on a written letter. Don't they know how last century having to write is?
