We have this problem too, but we just collect them up and pop them into an old jar.
    Saves us buying them;)

What ever you do, do not pick them up.

It is the only way they know how to get back to the sorting office.

Hehe..now all of you collectors just think about those poor postmen wandering the streets..never being able to find their way back to the sorting office...having to wait for hours next to a post box in the hope they can catch a lift when it's collected :p

I have been collecting these at work for three years. Our post comes everyday with three to four bands wrapped around it. I now have a HUGE rubber ball band. When I leave I am taking it home with me - it's gigantic!

Don't do what I did years ago and be tempted to bounce the thing of the floor as you'll be shocked at what speed they can end up bouncing and going through the one ceiling tile and coming out of another one

i am a postman and even though i try to collect bands in my fleece pocket its easy to drop a few on the floor each day. its worse when its hot and you just have trouser pockets which you have other stuff in, like pen, docket cards, keys, coz the bands inevitably get tangled up with this stuff when you pull something else out of your pocket they go all over the floor.

also most days i am in a hurry as i have so much to deliver that if i drop a band i usually just leave it as im walking fast to the next door. if you want to finish your job on time then you really do not have time to stop and pick up elastic bands!

I was reading OH's 'Courier' the other day, (magazine for post people) and there was an article telling posties not to drop them cos it costs Royal Mail thousands of pounds in replacing them.....!!!

So there you have it people. Thats why posties got no pay rise this year cos RM have spent all their money on elastic bands!!!!!!!!!!! :D

    i reuse my bands
once removed they go in my shirt pocket, end of the day they go back to the office
problem is they last a day or two at most before the start snapping.the newer ones are weaker again and 30%+ snap on 1st use
so dont think theres a massive recycling potential in them. the are biodegradable and not as strong as ye olde bands

Has any Postie been prosecuted for littering?
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
