I did it a couple of weeks ago, and lost £30. It didn't get recredited back to my account, but someone told me to put in a claim with my bank, and they have written to the bank which owned the machines to dispute it. Apparently if that machine was over at the end of the day, there is a chance that I might get my money back, but it's not looking too hopeful.0

Check and see if they have a cctv camera operating covering that ATM .It may even show the next person putting the £100 in their pocket if it does report it to the Police they will check the banks records of transaction and prosecute the person.0

Not sure all ATMs actually DO 'suck in' the money if not taken... or if they do, only after a long delay.
Couple of years ago I walked past an ATM on a Saturday afternoon. After a few paces, I stopped in my tracks as I thought I'd seen notes sticking out but wasn't sure. Went back, and sure enough there was. The bank was closed, and no-one anywhere near. Stood there 'guarding it' for a while, and eventually decided that if I didn't take the money, someone else would. Stood near the cashpoint for 10 mins or so, but still no-one came after it. There were no 'out of hours' contact details for the bank on the window, so not sure what to do next and thinking I might be on cctv 'stealing' the cash, I phoned the police while standing there. Still hadn't even counted it at that point (£80 !). They took details and asked if I'd drop it into the local station, which I did.
No-one claimed the money and after 3 months or so the Police contacted me to come and pick it up myself !
Can't believe the person who 'lost' that much wouldn't have made more effort to get it back.0 -
I'm glad im not the only plonker that does this !!!! :-)
I'm always 3 steps away when I hear the machine beeping to remind me I haven't actually got what I came for.
Apparently the original design for ATM's used to spit the cash out before returning your card, which caused an even higher rate of people walking away without their cards, they changed it in the assumption that most of us would hang on until we've got our reddies in our hands.
- WRT sucking it back in - It should do it within a certain time limit (120 seconds i think ??) otherwise it would not have passed aproval (of course the suck in mechanism could be busted !!!0 -

Natwest will have to get in touch with HSBC, as previously mentioned Hsbc will have to then check there journal roll for a difference on their atm. The machines do 'suck' the money back in, Im not sure of the exact time delay, but the same is true for your bank card, its for security so the money/card is safe and unable to be picked up (although can be before its sucked back in) I do hope you get your money back, your bank should have filed a dispute to HSBC straight away (did they do this?)

They can only do this if the person who took the money actually used the cashpoint. If they were there to take out cash, they may not have bothered to use the machine with their own card if they took what was there.0 -
Quite a while ago I was stood behind a bloke at an ATM and when he was done he wandered off into a shop and the machine started bleeping at me asking me if I wanted more time. I realised he had walked off and left his card so pressed the cancel button, had a quick look at name on the card and waited for him outside the shop he had gone into. I asked him if he had not long ago used the cash machine and he looked at me very oddly
I said I thought he had left his card in the machine and could he tell me the name on the card. He confirmed his name so I handed the card over. He was very grateful and I had a good feeling all day for doing the right thing
Hope you got sorted OP.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -
coolio wrote:Withdrew £100, took card and walked off, realised an hour later what I had done. Spoke to Natwest, apparantly it will take until tomorrow to possibly show up as being sucked back in. It was at an HSBC ATM.
Anyone had this happen before?
Does'nt your money come out first before your card is returned? Some do, not sure about HSNC machines.
In your case it would be better but I guess then people would take their money and walk away leaving the card which could be more damaging if the persion behind your saw your number.
Yes good luck from me 2!Regards,
Dave
If only I had a pound for every time I used the thanks button0
