Car Hire Scam -beware

Redrobbo,
for the extra insurance you paid for full cover you could have purchased a years insurance policy with Insurance4hire through tiscal (as posted) for £39 or £49 direct? This would cover you for everything you stated.
At todays exchange rate this would have still been £20 cheaper than you paid and you have over 11 months free cover. If you knew you would hire more than once in a year then cover is vital.
However on the other hand some people prefer the way you chose which is no bad thing as it removes any problems with damage and if there is damage you just give them the car back and that is it- no messy forms to fill in and wait for the cheque to re-inburse your costs-Personal choice!0 -
I have booked the full monte cover @ Faro costing €8.00 per day and they are waiving the bond/credit card stuff. All they ask is a €90 bond for petrol which is refunded if you return car with a full tank.
The cover includes locks, tyres and windscreens and covers the full excess.
This is the final email I got from the rental company aftere a whole string of them! For the insurance for tyres windows and locks is 3 euros/day .
Total cost for 10 days rental is 230 euros plus 90 euros for the petrol deposit.
Don't know what state the car will be in though will let you know!
8 Euros per day for ten days equals 80 Euros. Extra insurance for tyres etc is 3 euros per day times ten days equals 30 euros.
That is a total of 110 euros(£93.50) just for insurance.
So it's it eight Euros per day, three Euros per day or eleven Euros per day?
The cheapest of my insurance suggestions would have worked out to a total of £19 for the whole period.0 -
I have a friend who works in this industry and he told me this is very common, however you should as one poster already said ask for the previous hirers damage card. There was at one time a scam going with the locks, but this doesn't seem to happen so much now. It is not just Portugal it is everywhere according to him.
Pity you will not name the company, it would certainly help people who hire in the future.0 -

Sorry for the confusion. The car is €150, the excess waiver €50 and the windows/locks/tyres €30.
Thats the total of €230.
I know I could have got it cheaper in the uk but I don't want the hassle of dealing with a hire company in Portugal then having to reclaim costs.0 -
Ouch, which company was this? I've just returned fron Faro and booked with Europcar. I had no damage on return, but had taken a policy with 'Insurance4carhire' as mentioned on this site. You wouldn't need a police report to claim for scratches etc with this. It gave me peace of mind at a cheaper cost than Europcar and covers more eventualities.0
