I think, partly you need to try to ditch the junk as best as you can. a) it costs a fortune b) it doesnt fill you up.
Now iM no saint believe me, but my OH has really high cholestrol. He wouldnt eat any veg before, but now he knows he has to otherwise hes gonna die.
I think if theres some veg you guys can and will eat then thats best. The other thing is next time you need if you buy a bag of spuds ( value ones will do) then you can do much more with them, like have a jacket with fish fingers, or have sausage and mash & peas, or use for roasties or whatever.
If you only buy pre-made meat, like crispy chicken, you can pretty much only have them for one type of meal ie with chips/jacket. But if you buy chicken pieces you can have stirfry, stew, or lots of other combinations.
You need to be disciplined with the kids and you and say, only one treat a day after tea then what you have will last way longer.

Have you looked on the old school board for more ideas?
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I've been so angry with myself lately for spending what I don't really have on what I don't really need.

I've spent today looking at my balances and I've decided that enough is enough. I've posted some more items on ebay and have decided that I am going to take the cash out I need a week or maybe a month and then 'lose' my debit card at home. I cut up my credit card as soon as I got it after switching.

I may even bite the bullet and give my 'allowance' to my oh and ask him to dish it out to me. But not sure about that yet. The important thing is that I have money on me for petrol, but that is it. I am paid on Friday and I need to take action!!!

So anyway, you are not alone love, we all slip up, but we are all here to give each other a nudge in the right direction.

a flan bogof for dinner but i dont want it now proberly end up with takeaway again and the flans will end up in the bin

this is so typical of me i brought all that stuff and i only need the milk i am such a casei I HAVE GOT TO DO BETTER

    Hi earwig

you are doing exactly as i did / do . try before you put it on the till and look at each and ask yourself do you need it, Got to be really on the ball and do a list with the words at the top etc.
When you enter the supermarket our rational goes, (i put it down to good marketing) so you need a little prompt ie the words on paper .

I went in today and got what i needed

    apples
    cereal,
    bread.

saw binliners and got them cos i needed them.
did very well cos normally come out with rubbish.
I always do well at end of the month cos skint, beginning / middle is overspend time

Try and only go to the isle you need and dont think " just see what is on offer"

also think of what amount you are spending before you go and when you get to the till before paying see what amount is there , thinking about what you have spent that week

I am fantastic at the big amounts and save loads, but the small £5/£7.50 'sthat always get me it must be a sycylogical? thing

keep trying you will get there

    Psychological ;)

Why is it that when I go in purely for fresh veg and milk (which is first two aisles then along the back wall a little way) I still want to walk round every other inch of the place!

I always walk round *all* of every supermarket (which also explains why I always take forever) - ostensibly so I don't forget things (but very helpful unfortunately in letting me notice things instead)

Good luck balancing your diet out Earwig - if you don't like fruit and veg how about some salad things to put with flan or other bits from the freezer? They may be dull on their own (dressings can help too) but are great to break up the stodgier comfort foods :) And do what I don't and only let yourself into the fresh aisles, then off to the tills! (I promise to try to do the same...)

  • What about things like macaroni cheese? I put a cauliflower in mine so we have the yummy bit and the healthy bit (although I like cauliflower) altogether. You've got almost everything you'd need for that. With some mushrooms, pasta, bacon and the cream (you'd only need mushies) you can have spaghetti carbonara which is quicker and cheaper than a takeaway (cost you something like 20p for enough mushies for tea). You could even do chips, peas and fish fingers (or flan chips and beans) without going to the shops. From that, plus the other meals suggested so far, you've got something like six evening meals - all you'd need to spend is £1 on veg.

I think you need to start going with just enough to buy what you want and leaving your wallet at home. Chant what you're buying all the way to the shelf, then all the way to the till.

Be strong! you can do this!

  • buy a small cash book and write down EVERYTHING you spend. Write down the cost of everything you throw away or never use. Just sitting there doing this really annoying and boring task will rapidly switch your light bulb on! Keep using the site, the people here are inspirational.
    Good luck.
P.s. Its as easy to become addicted to saving as it is to spending!
  • Simple - if only going for a pint of milk, or somethign else just as small, why do you need to visit the supermarket?

Why not just go to a local store with a couple of quid in your pocket, forget your handbag/wallet - leave that at home. Walk to the local shop and pay a bit more for the milk, but actually you are saving money by not being tempted by other things and only having a couple of quid on you.

Indeed How do you get to the SuperMarket? By car? Well, save yourself the petrol and wear & tear on the car by walking to the shop. Good for the heart etc too!

Or if no local shops and SuperMarket is closest, walk there and back - you won't want to carry more back than a carton of milk or a loaf of bread! But remeber, only take a couple of quid with you!

    Good luck
