My new option has been to set up a new bank account, just something really simple.I did one with halifax which gives u a solo card.

Basically I transfer about £20 per week via internet banking, and only carry this card with me.

Therefore you don't have the risk of carrying cash. The solo card only allows you to spend whats in the account, and by trasnferring money weekly, I know that I'm sticking to my new budget for each week as opposed to trasnferring 80 per month and spending it all in one go.

I shop with my heart generally so I know how you feel.Yesterday I went shopping in wilko and actually put back the first 5 things i put in my basket because i knew I didnt need them to live, and it was just a lifestyle choice!
Although I was a little depressed afterwards I worked out roughly how much I would have spent if I hadn't been more savvy about what I was spending. So what nearly cost me £20 was still only the 2.99 that I had first intended to spend.

Hi Lynzpower - I have stopped buying Cravendale for exactly the same reason as you - the carton is cr*p. Milk everywhere. Shame, as the milk is so creamy that I have been watering down (as advised by somebody on these threads - sorry can't remember who!!) when I use 1/2 the bottle and fill it back up to the top - none of the family know I do it and are none the wiser - twice as much milk for the same price (yippee!!).

I had the same problem of only going in to buy bread and milk and spending far more than I needed to - so I bought an extra freezer and now store all my bread and milk in there. It has become routine to get it out the night before and so is defrosted by the morning and you cannot tell the difference - just by doing this and not having to go to the shops everyday has turned me from a supermarket shopoholic, to a shopalergic!!! I now hate the places and avoid going to them unless I really have to :D
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around was smiling. Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying! :rotfl:

To TurnaroundSue & Lynzpower....if you really like Cravendale but not the cartons...can't you save a more reliable milk container from another brand and pour the Cravendale into that before freezing...?

Guess so, but I can't tell the difference as I drink skimmed! Sami-skimmers I know rave about cravendale though, supposed to be a "crisper" taste...
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

I've always done just one weekly shop due to f/t working and having a youngish child, but used to see it as a 'big shop' each time and freeze milk and bread to get us to the next weekend.

Now that I've moved to using the market/farm shop/butchers, I treat the supermarket run as a minor shop and not only have a budget, but also try to get there, back and unpacked within 45 mins!! Means I dash round, only get what's on my list, avoid aisles that I don't need to look in and my littlen is happier - as he is waiting for the treat of taking the bus to town for the market!

I check the comparison sites for offers if I'm running low on a dry/household item before I go, so I'm saving without adding time to the shop!

I also have a challenge to not fill more than 4 carrier bags, and always use those small trollies - looking in a big trolley that's half empty makes me think I've forgotten half the stuff!

    All psychology...but working for me!

I love supermarketing (I thought I was weird till I saw you lot huddled over here!)

I think it's because I'm really controlled with most spending but the brakes come off for small amounts.

I also really like the feeling of being free to choose, so tend to chafe at the idea of pre-planning and I find online shopping excruciating to do (plus miss being able to ensure my fresh goods have best dates!)

Like CAFCGirl I've also got a seperate Groceries a/c (piggybanking!) which is really useful, but I top mine up as needed... which could do with a review.

Can I also suggest to the milk mid-weekers an idea that I'm thinking of myself - support your local dairy milkround, if you can bear to pay slightly more you will at least always have a supply.

I'm the same, if I pop into the supermarket for a few bits you can guarantee I'll spend double what I intended to because I spot things I *need*. I do nearly all my shopping online now because of this as there are no impulse buys and no screaming kids (my own!) and most of the time I will stick to my budget.

hi.. earwig....i used have the same problem ( still got it now but not as bad) nip out to the supermarket because i needed milk, came back with about £60.00 of shopping, which prob half of it would be uneaten and then thrown out...then i started getting the local milk man to call... now i know the milk is a lot dearer than the shops... but my logic was it was cheaper in the long run to buy the milk from the milkman at a higher price, as i would never go into the supermarket for milk and just come out with that....

now the milkman has stopped delivering, as he wasnt getting the support to earn a decend wage....so now ..if we run out of milk... i will send my hubby out to get it...also if he is not around....i go and ask a neighbour if their going to the shop that day. and if they were, i would ask them to get me the milk..i know it is cheeky to ask a neighbour, but if it saves you money in the long run...also.... a lot of local independent shops will now deliver.. so maybe it might be worth you asking in your area.....
also i think its right in saying you can freeze semi - skimmed milk....

    good luck........cooltrikerchick.......................
