    Avoid Opera at all costs.

    What's your rationale for that?

It's a funny old browser with funny/quirky DOM handling that means websites don't always render properly and more often than not they don't always function correctly either.

The design issues stem from the fact that most companies design with only IE and FF in mind, Safari is usually ok due to the way in renders pages, it's very similar to FF. Chrome and Opera use different rendering engines and DOMs to both IE and FF and as such sometimes mess things up. It's just not worth the hassle to be honest, chromes faster and safari's sexier, so just save yourself the headache and avoid opera. That's only my personal opinion though, I have a guy who i work with who's also a web developer and loves opera, so each to his own I guess.

Browsers such as Safari have had this for a year now. As a web developer I would always suggest to people to ditch IE (all versions, especially 6).

If you like the look and feel of IE and don't want to change too much then switch to FireFox 3, FF is compaitble with all websites too so you wont have any problems with internet banking, online shopping etc...
If you want fast browsing and amazing looks switch to Safari.
If you want super fast browsing and don't mind awful looks then switch to Google Chrome.
    Avoid Opera at all costs.

I have IE6 on my home PC for my starbucks card site doesn't work with FF and newer IE doesn't work in wine. The site recoments IE5 or above or Netscape Navigator of all things, page developer needs to get with the program.

IE8 is far, far too slow.

Get Safari or Chrome, much better and quicker...

Seriously? Navigator! That's shocking. Probably works on the Mosaic browser too, lol.

I will also add this, since their latest upgrade to version 3, FireFox has become a bit bloated and slow like IE, although not as bad, my personal preference is Safari.

Firefox is only as bloated as you make it, by installing add-ons. I have the basic installation with IETab (for sites that only work with IE), and it runs quickly enough for me

The only addon I run (and I only run this when I'm developing) is firebug, I never need any other addons. It seems to run particulaly slowly when you have multiple firefox windows open. You can have as many tabs open as you like and it runs ok, but as soon as you have more than 1 window open it kills the CPU.
  • mr_fishbulb,
The browsing mode that you can enable which helps prevent your browsing history, temporary Internet files, form data, cookies, and usernames and passwords from being retained by the browser is called InPrivate Browsing. You can learn more about it here - wwwdotmicrosoftdocom/windows/internet-explorer/features/saferdotaspx (replace the "dot" with a period ".")
    mwilletts,
If you’re having issues with your Internet running slow or lagging in IE8 you may be running too many add-ons. In IE go to ‘tools’ and ‘manage add-ons’ then disable/enable. Disabling any unnecessary add-ons may help your Internet run faster. I’d suggest disabling any add-ons with more than a .2 second load time.
