Chip & Pin fraud- Please help!

    I was assuming that there was a particular fraud that could not happen in UK but could happen in Europe/worldwide that they were putting pressure on other countries to strengthen their systems to bring them in line with UK.

    No. Some countries started off with it; mainly due to their predominance of offline transaction processing and higher security requirements. The UK was not one of them since the majority of transactions are authorised online and the cost of the higher-spec cards was disproportionate to the risk. If a transaction is sent online for authorisation then there is very little additional benefit in having a more secure offline capability.

    I have had the same thing happen to me, on a smaller scale. My card was used fraudently to buy vodaphone topup vouchers totalling £70, and it was barclays that notified me of this.

    I claimed using the forms and recieved a rejection letter on the basis that the card cannot be copied and it must have been stolen and returned to me without me knowing, as i had the card in my possession.

    I ve written a letter disputing this, along with examples of why it couldnt be me, although its on the basis that i have a ongoing monthly contract for the last 8 years with the same phone company. I ve also contacted the financial Ombudsman and sent the letter through them.

    To be honest i am not sure whether i will get it back but its left me wanting to change banks!

    If you look on other posts you will see a link to a watchdog programme in which two people had thier chip n pin cards copied and one managed to argue her money back.

    They are talking rubbish

    The other people will have had their cards cloned BUT there will not have been a transaction performed with a cloned card using chip and pin technology.

    In your case they will have used the card profile (numbers) to purchase credit from an automated service over the phone (there will have been no need for a physical card or pin number)- it is very common on Tesco's top ups (O2) - there is a thread about this on this site

  • Had three ATM withdrawals on my Sonycard American Express credit card account by a cloned card, in Walthamstow. Was in London for a couple of days a few days preceding this day. MBNA who adminstered the card, contacted me to ask about these transactions which I confirmed were not made by me. As I had no previous history of making ATM withdrawals.

    Have received a couple of standard suspicious activity on your account please contact us letters. Having already given a detail account, I call them again earlier this week. Only after waiting over 5 minutes to get through, I was told the fraud team had gone home. Asked for a call back, which was refused, and I was told that I would have to call back. I said that why should I given that I had just waited over 5 minutes ? Ben (would not give full name) then said if I did not call back then the fraudulent transactions would not be removed from my a/c. I responded by saying that his comment were tantamount to fraudulent behaviour on his part.

    Spoke to a lady at Sutton Coldfield police station, and she was amazed by the behaviour of MBNA. She advised me that they (the credit card) were the victim, and that the police would only get involved if they did not remove the fraudulent transactions from my account. She went on to advise that once this was settled I would be best advised to cancel this account and take my business elsewhere.

    Sent a recorded delivery letter this Tuesday stating this and asking for explanations into their handling of this matter. Apparently the police lady mentioned the customer charter requiring them to reply within 7 days.

    No response yet. Checked the online account statement, and fraudulent transactions remain on there, with the recent addition of an interest charge on top of the service charges associated with these withdrawals.
