LOl can't beleive the trite posted in most of this thread.

Re caliber of pcw techs: They are fairly competent. You mention school leavers, most of the type that would get a job in pcw tech bench, are the 'geeky' type that probabally know more about pc repair than most mcse's.

I'm not an employee of pcworld I've worked for them in the past. Sales based, then into their business centre - selling to business. It's not a 'great job' don't get me wrong. But it's ok. The managers drive you to get what they can out of you which isn't great - it should be a bit more give and take but this is an entry level retail sales job type of environment so not much more to be expected really.

For consumuables and peripherals pcw is well overpriced so I wouldn't even go there. But for basic pc's (especially packard bells which I think are great) - I think it's as good a choice as any to buy your pc from.

fwiw my personal preference is dell - direct.

Good luck all with your pc troubles - and remember everyones human at the end of the day - the people that work in these places are also humans so a bit of empathy and good communication can go a long way.

... Now I seem to have just been defending pcworld which is something that I'd never thought I'd be doing... but forums have a funny effect on people! =)

LOL i've interviewed quite a few PC World employees and never yet given one a job ;)

Oh and I agree with 4Fingus regarding the quality of the "Tech" of the Tech Guys

I love how when someone says the word PC World, everything just spouts what they think. There are 2 departments to the Tech Guys.

The ones that are in store, and maybe they are not as qualified as the ones who work directly for Mastercare, who repair things on site.

Now, with laptops, no one in store would have touched the laptop, as it is sent away.

I could go into more details on my little rant here, but I'm not going to bother. You all seem to have a negative opinion of the company, but obviously they're not aiming their services at the techie people on here. They have their place, and I'm sure there are plenty of customers who are happy with getting a replacement laptop with their extended warranty service.

I know some people would rather save £150 not buying it, and then fork out £300 for a new laptop, but IMO, the warranty the OP has had, has done exactly what it says on the tin!

A good post. A lot of their reputation on here has come from a few posters who had a poor experience once, and because they're an 'expert' (when clearly some are not!) they treat any salesperson as though they're an idiot and then expect them to be helpful. Their opinion on PCW/Dixons etc must be therefore fact and everyone else follows like sheep. Sure, the company has its faults, as does every large company such as tesco, dell, even apple etc. The times I've ever had to buy something from my local PC world store in Derby, I've found them ok to deal with. I once has a psion 3a, and after 6 months of use where the screen went funny, they upgraded me to a 3c straight away.

Don't believe everything you read on the 'net ;)

As jaydee says there ARE people in PCWorld that do know what they are talking about however my issue is that there are also people they employ with virtually no knowledge who are then attempting to give advice to people potentially spending hundreds of pounds. The problem being that you don't know if the person giving you advice knows what they are talking about or not.
The main reason I recommend steering clear of PCWorld is in general you end up paying way over the odds for stuff whether is a PC, a laptop or a cable. While this isn't always true I would rather recommend somewhere that is more likely to give good prices on a more regular basis.

    haha i hate that

when you get someone giving you advice when they clearly know nothing

i asked what the fsb was of a laptop when i was getting an exchanhe and he said, whats that?

then tried telling me that a it didnt matter that the processor was less and the fsb was less(when i told him what it was) and that going from a 2.66ghz core 2 duo to a 2.0ghz core 2 duo wont matter

i mean where did he get that idea from? lol
    Back by no demand whatsoever.
