I bought it around £700 5 yrs ago. At that time laptops was quite expensive and I just had a basic one. It's only Intel Celeren, 40gb, 768 MB Ram. Only I use internet and basic word applications so I did not need a laptop with high spec. I dont think they will pay me alot for this laptop now?

    MS

im not sure they even sell laptops that low speced anymore

apart from netbooks but you can argue oin the basis of screen size

which is good because you will get at least 1gb of ram

probs 100gb+ of hard drive space

unless they offer you a reconditioned model in which case you cant decline.

LOl can't beleive the trite posted in most of this thread.

GL original poster you should have got a policy document with your cover plan. Just check the terms and conditions. If it states it is to be replaced if you've waited more than 3 weeks, or w/e you were told, that is your right. If it is they will have to provide you with the nearest machine to the spec you had. So if they only have better laptops that is the laptop you will get.

Re: the whole PC world is rubbish things. It's a retail shop. You pay your money you make your choice. You buy a pc and it's not as described? take it back... hello? Call them up... if you got it from a store in that situation they'd probabally have given you vouchers if you chose to keep the thing which would have probabally been more useful in the exact situation quoted because the guy/gal already had a spare DVD drive.

Re caliber of pcw techs: They are fairly competent. You mention school leavers, most of the type that would get a job in pcw tech bench, are the 'geeky' type that probabally know more about pc repair than most mcse's.

I'm not an employee of pcworld I've worked for them in the past. Sales based, then into their business centre - selling to business. It's not a 'great job' don't get me wrong. But it's ok. The managers drive you to get what they can out of you which isn't great - it should be a bit more give and take but this is an entry level retail sales job type of environment so not much more to be expected really.

For consumuables and peripherals pcw is well overpriced so I wouldn't even go there. But for basic pc's (especially packard bells which I think are great) - I think it's as good a choice as any to buy your pc from.

fwiw my personal preference is dell - direct.

Good luck all with your pc troubles - and remember everyones human at the end of the day - the people that work in these places are also humans so a bit of empathy and good communication can go a long way.

... Now I seem to have just been defending pcworld which is something that I'd never thought I'd be doing... but forums have a funny effect on people! =)

An update - I phoned Tech Guys today - they said vouchers was issued yesterday for the value of £299.99. I was expecting less than this due to my laptop spec.

Any idea which is good laptop to buy? Can spend abit more.

Your looking bottom of the line for that price unless you wanted to go for a netbook...

This looks good for the price :)

Stay away from Advents - or your repairs will have to be PC World.
They're the only ones who can get the parts at reasonable prices.
Then you pay them a fortune for it or to get it installed.

IMO the Tech guys dont have a clue what they are doing and are mainly students in the middle of some computer science degree with no relation to real life experience what so ever... as always there are a few exceptions to the rule but anyone worth thier salt in this arena will be in a corporate/enterprise environment ** Gets that off his chest **

A problem 'ticket' or call should have been created when your PC was accepted for repair. Have you been given access to the 'updates' to the system? ask for a progress report and any actions carried out to resolve your complaint. Any professional outfit (like PC World) should have a professional call logging and reporting system.
