If you post over at Dogpages - someone will be able to recommend a rescue pooch/centre that will advise whether a dog is suitable with cats. If you spot a pooch you have a soft spot for most reputable rescue centres will "cat test" the dog specifically for you. Or you could take your own cat/s there in a basket and test to see if the dog has any interest.

But honestly - theres a "dogs wanted section" on Dogpages - join and then post a message and you will receive loads of helpful advice and recommendations.

I think the labradoodle above ticks all the boxes and is fairly near you.

    OP?

I would also recommend a retired Greyhound, I've never heard of a bad report from anyone adopting one... although I'm sure there must be some :)

If you did want to look at greyhounds the merseyside branch of RGT is http://www.adoptagreyhound.co.uk/ or you could try Greyhound Rescue West of England at http://www.grwe.com/index.asp I know they foster a lot of their dogs so would be able to let you know how they are with children and cats, they also get in Lurchers here of which I have two (and one foster) and would highly recommend!

Our foster has shown a bit of interest in cats (we think this may jus be following our one dogs lead) otherwise I would recommend him to you.

Our rescue dog came from Dogs Trust. They "tested" her with the manager's cat and as a previous poster said after about 3 or 4 days of hell they became best friends. They still are. I can't recommend Dogs Trust enough - very friendly and helpful.

Thanks to everyone who posted links, I'll sit and have a good read tonight. Want to get as much info as I can, don't want to rush into anything.

I don't have a specific dog breed in mind so would happily consider a greyhound. I'll check the site out.

The labradoodle does look great, looks like he's smiling lol. But Rochdale is about 60 miles from me and I have no transport.

The problem with the dog/cat thing for me is one of my cats is less than friendly, our dog was here long before she was but she never got used to it, she would still hiss and attempt to drive by scratch the dog, always completely unprovoked attacks, thankfully the dog just ignored the cat. Our other cat is lovely, loved the dog, loves people, doesn't bat an eyelid when friends bring their dogs around, so I know he'll be no problem at all.

google maps puts Rochdale 46 miles from my postcode, which is pretty far if you don't have a car, but you do have a 70 year old disabled mother to take with you, especially one who suffers terrible travel sickness. Not a trip I'd be willing to have her make unless I was 100% certain the dog was for us (obviously it's her house too, so not a decision I could make without her), which unfortunately we wouldn't be able to do until we saw it, bit of a catch twenty two, sadly it's just not that practical for me to look that far afield.
