Hi,

For those of us whose Windows XP installtion disks are woefully out of date I've put together a guide on how to create an up to date version so that if your system restore doesn't work and you have to re-install - you don't have to wait for more than a week for microsoft's automatic update facility to eventually catch up. (I had to re-install to SP2 and even after Auto got to SP3 it collected a further 80+ updates that have been issued since!)

So could you techy types check the first post in the thread linked below please to make sure that I haven't said anything absolutely wrong, or missed out anything important?

Slipstream Windows XP with SP3 and updates (and drivers)

I'd appreciate it if any comments and corrections required were posted onto that thread rather than this one to help keep all the info in one place.

TYIA :)

There is an easier way, install it, patch it, image it.

It really doesn't take that long to download all the updates, alternatively there are tons of OS installation image files about on bit torrent sites, just read any reviews/comments to make sure its genuine and NEVER download cracked software.

I've got OS install disks for every version of 98, XP and Vista (OEM, VLK and Retail of each version). No CD key's though, they're purely for use on systems that have genuine OS installs already.

    Thanks guys.

The whole point of this was that you need to re-install if you cannot use system recovery, or the repair facility. And as I said installing and updating is a pain. As for imaging... image what?

I just said... I've had to do this and it took more than a week to catch up. Honest.

Guys... if you have to follow up could you please do it on the original thread.

Image a working system using ghost, acronis, paragon, macrium free, clonezilla, driveimagexml etc.

Sliptreaming might be useful if you have loads of pc's to manage, but for the average home user, it's a less tortuous process and more productive use of time to get a pc working and image it to DVD, making recovery much faster.

That would only work if you take an image off that particular computer. Putting that image on ANOTHER computer might not work due to the different drivers involved that XP auto initiates depending on the computer

Can you post on the other thread and elaborate on that please?

Do I need to make the font size bigger?

Yep, and putting an image on a computer you've just done a bunch of hardware updates on may not work.

It's why I outlined, and only "outlined", how to make yourself an up to date basic installation disk.

Once you've done all that - running the program again and adding in your customisations is dead easy so that yes, you can do a one click restore/installation of your OS.
