Mobileshop Insurance

Hi all,

I have just taken out a contract with mobileshop, and don't want to keep the insurance. I was just wondering if anyone has had any problems doing this within the 3 months "free" period.
For example, is it ok to do this by phone, or do they tend to "forget" if you don't put it in writing? Do you need to give a months notice before the end of the 3 free months?
Just wondering if anyone has been caught out with this, as I don't really want to end up paying a month by mistake.

Thanks for any advice.

    Welcome

It is probably sufficient to contact the bank and cancel the direct debit, but it might be worth contacting the insurers as well just to tell them.

Thanks for reminding me; I've had mine nearly a couple of months

I got charged one months payment, as they said they never got my cancellation letter. That wasn't mobileshops issue, but the insurers. Never had any problem with mobile shop. I have just got another one of the years free cashback phones, so need to cancel the insurance also.

I wrote to them - recorded delivery, and will cancel with the bank to be sure - they recommend it in their cancellation letter to you.

Thanks for the advice (and for the welcome, Redux :) )
Seems like cancelling the direct debit is a sensible move, then.

I just sent an email to the insurers after about 1 month and cancelled the DD with the bank. Got a reply back the same day saying my policy had been cancelled.

    hi,

I've just cancelled my phone insurance with the company in question. All you need to do is phone the insurance company up to cancel, at least 5 working days before the first payment goes out. To cancel, after dialling up, instead of going through the normal options to cancel (it will just tell you to send a letter) just press 5 (at the beginning when the options starts) and you will be connected to a person. Tell them you want to cancel and it should be sorted. Cancellation of your insurance is terminated there and then. I think calls are recorded anyway should you have a dispute with this event. You should get a letter in the post in the next few days to confirm the cancellation. :)

Go to your bank to see if there is a DD setup, make sure you cancel that if you can. My bank, Natwest did not have the details of the insurance DD as it was going to be the first DD payment so they couldn't cancel it (as there was essentially nothing to cancel as it has not been entered into the system).

If you did get charged for one month, cancel your DD with the bank and then wait until at least 5 days before the next payment goes out, to cancel your insurance with the insurance company. Otherwise you will have paid for a service that you mite need (see below).

Finally to those deciding on whether to cancel the insurance just after getting the phone, I would say, think real hard about doing so. As we cannot predict the future, would you not want something that is free to use and is there as a backup should the inevitable happen? Like with the cashbacks, make a note on your calendar, mobile phone or computer reminding you to cancel your mobile insurance both with the insurance company and with the bank. ;)

My advice is to cancel as soon as possible. Yes you will lose 3 months of protection but the phone is free and you will have to pay an excess anyway so there is not much value. I cancelled within the first month as I intended to phone the insurance company only. This gives plenty of time to get confirmation that the insurance has indeed been cancelled and I did get a letter from the insurance company saying so.
My motorola developed a fault in less than 2 weeks and the excess was £25 so I just could swapped the sim into my old phone as I could not be bothered paying out. It is the contarct which is more valuable.

thor why didn't you send your phone back to Mobileshop if it developed a fault? My OH phone (Sony E) stopped working and he sent it back and had a brand new phone dispatched within days.

I too emailed Mobileshop to cancel the insurance no problem. I'v also had the cashback from them without any issues.
