car insurance for a lad with claims

hi :-) my son passed his test and had two years no claims off his moped, the well known compay excepted these, then one year claim free. then this year he had his car stollen - he himself found the culprits and informed the police of their name and address. then last month he hit a gate in a car park. today he got his renwall throught £2200!! he is gutted. sadly there is now way he can afford this. i have spent all day trying to find him a better quote but no joy. i think this is harsh as he has been on the road for 4 years and in my eyes only had one incident which is beding a gate. dose anyone have any suggestions where else i might try? thanks julie

You haven't said where you have tried at this point. Have you tried Quinn? Get a car mag and look at the ads for specialist brokers in the back, then start calling. Unfortunatly, for a young lad to have 2 claims in one year the cost will inevitably spiral.0

Some people find that adding a second driver (not as main driver though) can reduce premium, particularly mothers and sisters. Regarded as lower risk by the insurer.0

How old is he now and what type of car does he have? Is it possible for him to switch to a car in a cheaper group? Could he take the Pass Plus Course? Some insurers will treat that as an additional 1 year's no claims bonus. http://www.passplus.org.uk/0

he is 19 will be 20 in july. i have done all the comparison webb sites. direct line swinton all the same over £2000. admiral would do it for £1390 but had to be paid in a lump sum if paid monthly it went to over 2 grand.
if feel sorry for him really - we have done everything to make sure our 3 lads stay legal and the one incident that he is to blame cost them less than 200 quid - he didnt ask for his car to be stollen it was locked and on a drive - so why is he to blame?
all three of my boys have "mates" or there mated know of lads driving with no licence had multiple crashes ect ect ect. so why make it hard for the ones trying to keep legal?0 -

I understand what you're saying and have sympathy for you and him both, but its really only a "whinge" or rant you're having about the "illegals"....at the end of the day, YOU have it in your power to help the very same industry you're complaining about, perhaps it would be better for the ones trying to keep legal...if the illegal ones were taken off the road, fined...or better still locked up....there's one way to help your son...its like the old saying...put your money where your mouth is..

yes i guess it is a rant - why - because i am old and the insurance companys cannot screw me to the wall so i am sittin pretty - probably like your good self????
i HAVE put my money where my mouth is for all three of my kids so i do not need you to tell me to do this - but thanks you anyway.
they are all fully insured and taxed and moted and road legal, how ever one of them - the one that is now looking for insurance - has just been laid off so he cannot afford to put his money where his mouth is.
he is getting bits of work but needs his car to go to site, but this is now a worry.
i guess he will have to join the rank and file and go on the dole, at least then he wont have to worry about the insurance eh? got to look on the bright side0 -
Don't bother with the comparison sites for young drivers. You need to be contacting companies directly, particularly the specialist brokers that someone mentioned in a previous post.julieanne13 wrote: »he is 19 will be 20 in july. i have done all the comparison webb sites. direct line swinton all the same over £2000. admiral would do it for £1390 but had to be paid in a lump sum if paid monthly it went to over 2 grand.
I'm a young driver too, so I understand the frustration, but what we need to remember is that if the "riskier" drivers were given cheaper policies, then it would put everyone else's premiums up too. Now I'm sure you agree with me that the people who post the most risk should pay the most, rather than everyone paying for them.0 -
Julieanne13...think you missed my point, yes I'm in the same situation, I've paid insurances all my life, I'm retired on a pension and have less coming into my home than some of the local druggies (all up to all sorts of illegalities)...all our savings have just gone on putting our daughter through the LPC, she finishes in July...there are few if any training contracts around...so she's unfortunately going on the dole, our son is learning to drive, we know he won't be able to afford insurance when he passes his test, he will however have a licence when he applies for a job, this world and this life isn't fair...why do others get and you (we as well don't) who knows...thats the way of the world...
"put your money where your mouth is"....if you know someone breaking the law...report them...if you don't you cant complain about the system...simple as that...life is too short to spend time ranting...ok its good to get it off your chest....but a rant is all it is....move on...unless of course you want to try and fix it....report them...after all its their fault insurance is so high for young drivers....if you're not part of the solution...you're part of the problem....sorry...put your money where your mouth is...report all these lawbreakers...otherwise you cant really complain...and God forbid if one of them should be in a RTA and a child is killed or maimed...reember...you're aware of who these lawbreakers are....I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j

i agree with you puy up or shut up :-) my son told the police the names and the addresses of the 3 lads that stole his car - how long did it take them to go to an address do you think? 2 and a half months! that was the first address because they kids know the poloce were going they had chance to get their stories right so TWOC went to so mis demener only 2 of the three got done and they got extra school time. my son and i felt well happy.
my bother reported a guy to the police for drink driving - he worked with him and the guy left totally paraletic - the police didnt even attemp to come.
my eldest sons best mate bought a care and didnt have a licence - this made me cross but i did nothing - till he statred taking his daughter in it. yep double standards i know - sorry for being human. i my self rand the police he had no licence no tax no insurance and no mot to me that is quite immportant - did the police think so? dont knon after reporting him twice he is still driving 6 months after the first call.
that is only some of what i have seen
put up or shut up - i have put up and the police do nothing.
belive it or not i do not even blame the police i belive the insurance companys are robbers - they rape and pilage on a daily basis and we pay up. i am not just on about my sons both hubby and i have cars both have driven 30 years a peice both accident and conviction free (touch wood) we still pay hundreds of pounds but the shocker came when i found out that i was not on his insurance - what did they say when i asked to be added? that will be another 65 a year! more than a pound a week for someone who rearly uses it is next to little risk - shisters.
my eldest and youngest were both laid off in january they refuse to sign on they live on two or three days a week with us subing them - why? because they have pride - my sister says they must be mad. i belive it is because they have been rasied correclty.
so i have put my money where my mouth is - and have always done so. i have also reported crime just like you said i should but un like you and i the police donot think it that big a deal.
i came on here to see if anyone had any idea of an insurance company that might do a better deal. i did not come on here for you to question my morals or imply i should pay my sons insurance. look at the other responces - that is what this board is for0 -
Police and how they work...thats another topic...
asking for advice...thats another topic...
pose a question "all three of my boys have "mates" or there mated know of lads driving with no licence had multiple crashes ect ect ect. so why make it hard for the ones trying to keep legal?"
you opened the door on that one...
questioned your morals?...dont think so...
"my eldest and youngest were both laid off in january they refuse to sign on"...I assume you and your husband have worked paying into the system...I assume your eldest and youngest have also paid into the system...its an entitlement they are elligible for....if all the druggies, self inflicted alcos, asylum seekers and goodness knows who else are entitled...so are they....so its not a pride issue, its what they are legitimately entitled to...and perhaps with a bit more convincing from you and/or your husband, they would avail themselves of what is there for them.I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j
