I shave my legs and pits in the spring/summer.

My DH did cut the the ends of my hair off today. I had layered it myself doing the "hair over the bath thing" which left it nicely layered but a bit too long so I put it into a low ponytail and got him to cut the bit off below the band. I now have a nicely layered bob that cost me absolutely nothing and feels nice :)

I stopped relying on make-up when I realised it meant I had to wear it every day just to look like myself (as I thought other people saw me).

If you really want people to say "wow, you look great today" - simply don't wear make-up (or wear very, very little) for a couple of days beforehand. When you then go in to work or wherever wearing your fake face I can guarantee you everyone will tell you how fabulous you look.

I do wear make-up if I'm "going out" for a nice night with my DH (and then it annoys me because I have to take it off again when I get home :)).

  • I am REALLY low maintenance

Hair is cut by me, the twist method, never been coloured (been accused of highlights, but just going grey)
Shave underarms almost daily, legs when on display (last time 2 years ago)
Make up last worn last xmas

Nothing artificial here though I am so pale that i may think about fake tan

Question, can you wear sunblock on top of fake tan:confused:

    1. Fake Nails (every 3-4 weeks) Acrylic nails & a French manicure topped with a virtually indistuctible gel coating.
    2. Make-up EVERYDAY (local bylaw says I'm not allowed out without it;)).
    3. Semi-permenant make-up on my eyebrows.
    4. Coloured hair (my natural colour without silver highlights:rolleyes:), every 4-5 weeks.
    5. GHDed to within an inch of its life hair:D
    6. Hair removal, very frequently, thinking of doing the permenent removal under the armpits, is it painful:eek:
    7. Coloured contacts
    8. Pluck eyebrows & curl lashes

I get fake tans now & again, not often. Haven't used a sunbed in a couple of years.

Apart from the nails I have the odd facial & pedicure.
I have the odd massage & I do love a block booking of reflexology, but those two are hollistic rather than "fake".

    Isn't this just normal maintenance:confused:

I dye my hair every six weeks
I remove hair from most parts of my body (!)
I almost never leave the house without a full face of make up
I always have painted toenails (I used to have fake nails on my hands as well but they interfered with my exercise regime a bit much!)
I've used fake tan in the past, but it tends to look a bit odd on me.
I have been known to use a little "assistance" in the cleavage department from time to time too!

If I could afford it I might possibly consider a boob job - but I'm sure I'd chicken out! If I can make myself certain it's safe I'll probably think about botox as I get a bit older. The technology is there so it makes sense to make use of it after all!

Women have been enchancing their looks since the Egyptians rimmed their eyes with kohl (and probably before that), so I think being "fake" is actually a pretty natural part of being female.

Besides which, making the effort to do yourself up a bit before leaving the house shows respect for yourself and for other people. Being "natural" is often more a case of being lazy.
Question, can you wear sunblock on top of fake tan

Yes of course you can. But wait for the tan to dry first.

I don't think natural is lazy to be honest, I don't see why showing respect for other people is about whether I am wearing make up or not?

About 10-12 years ago I wouldn't even go to the shop without make up on (I was in my mid 20s). I think I thought it would show me in a better light etc, but it didn't. I can't remember what broke the cycle, possibly being made redundant but I look back now and can't understand why I felt the need to be wearing make up every day. Perhaps, for me, it was a confidence thing - a 'mask' to the world, but i'm treated no differently without it than with it on!

I look professional but natural (well, apart from my fire red hair!!) and if someone doesn't like me for that, then that's there problem, I find now I have much more confidence in myself as 'me' and people either like me for who I am or they don't and if they don't like me, make up, nails etc probably isn't going to make much of a difference to their opinion ;)

Although there is a huge difference between natural and slob. I would never go to the supermarket wearing stained or dirty clothing, but I see plenty who do!

I see it as grooming, like a man putting on a tie or something.

I think women who don't wear makeup look less "groomed" than women who do.

This is just my humble opinion, please don't rip through me for it, I'm just being honest.

If I went to work or a function without makeup it would be like wearing unironed clothes to me.

I will go to the supermarket or shop without makeup at a push, but I wear big sunglasses:rotfl:

I think it's horses for courses.

Most women where I work don't wear make up - the ones who do almost look odd to be honest. I wore make up when I first started there and after a couple of weeks thought - nobody else is, why am I bothering?

I wouldn't go to an evening out without some light makeup, but only because I see it as a treat.

I wore more make up at 15 as a New Romantic devotee than I have since I was 30 !! Dear god, yellow, blue and pink stripes of eyeshadow and lots of blusher :rotfl:

Be interesting to see what peoples thoughts are then on mens grooming - particularly those who like to use lots of products themselves. Should men be more groomed - ie use fake tan, hair product, wax themselves etc to be seen as 'groomed?'

I am in the beauty school of sometimes I can be bothered, sometimes I can't (mostly can't if I'm honest!)

Whilst I accept that I look better with make up on I hardly wear it, mainly because I never seem to have the time in the morning (I would rather have an extra twenty minutes in bed!) but also because I don't really like the feel of it on my face. Because I have spots it has to be heavy to cover them up and I don't like it!

Someone once said to me that if you wear make up every day when you have to make the effort no one really notices.....and also if I have to wear make up to make people like me/fancy me then they are probably not worth the effort in the first place!

My eyebrows get plucked when I can find tweezers (I have six pairs in my house and can never find any of them!) and the same goes for my legs and armpits, they get shaved when I remember but to be honest thats more or less every week at the minute (can't shave them more often then that, they go all dry and horrid). I did have my legs waxed once but wasn't really that impressed with the results.

The only thing I am vain about is my hair, it has to be washed and blowdried every day, cannot stand having messy dirty hair. Mind you it is fairly short now and needs washing every day because of the gunk I put in it to hold the curl. Before, when it was long it was washed every other day but still brushed and straightened every day!

Oh and my teeth are all mine (I would like them to be a wee bit whiter but not super white, that just looks odd) and my boobs are to, 34F last time I was measured......not sure about whether or not I would want them lifted, they do fail the pencil test big time lol!

Thanks everyone for the great replies, it turned out to be a really interesting thread, as much as I moan about my high maintenance routine I have was on the beach all day yesterday and felt fab and went out shopping today and felt just as good, so for me anyway that balances it all out:) Just a couple of comments to make about some of things that I do, I really don't spend a lot of money on grooming as I do everything (except dental work) myself including haircutting and extensions, I put in the time instead of the cash and admittedly do have a knack for all things beauty, eyelash extensions are from eyelure and available in Boots or Superdrug for about £6, each set I do last about 10 days and ususally get 3 sets from a pack, they are a bit tricky at first but once you've got it you will never need mascara again:T, fake tan is an absolute essential for me and quality and Price cant be beaten from this site http://www.celebritysecrets.co.uk/SunlessTanningSolutions-4 hth :)
Thank you for this site Martin

I de-fuzz myself and have to fill in my eyebrows most days cos I plucked them to death as a teenager.

    That's it.

I scrub and moisturise a lot but don't wear makeup, don't colour my hair (would like to go bright red but boss wouldn't be happy), don't own a hairdryer, don't go to hairdressers. I file my nails to be as short as poss because long nails make me feel sick at the thought of all the germs trapped in them.
