Hi, just tried that and it will not allow me to run it in safe mode either.
Is there anything else I can try.
If I was to make a recovery disk, is it likely that this virus would get onto the disks and leave me where I am now.?[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

If you were to make a recovery disc to where you are now you would have the exact same problem yes
Run LSPFIX
Download HostsXpert
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Security-Related/Hoster.shtml
and then follow the below steps.
* Unzip HostsXpert.zip
* It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
* Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
* click the Make Writeable? button.
* click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
* Click the X to exit the program
Now where upto trying malwarebytes and hijack again. If they STILL fail then its a case of trying to find ANYTHING that works for now
COMBOFIX is next port of call
Please run COMBOFIX
Follow the simple instructions it gives
Post the COMPLETE log it creates here (Split into sections if need be)
FIREFOX etc ~
If it comes up with a RENAMING error then RIGHT click the exe file and RENAME and call it QWERTY (Making the complete file name 'QWERTY.exe')
INTERNET EXPLORER ~
SAVE as 'QWERTY' on download THEN ok it to save to the desktop:idea:0 -
Use Google as your homepage and search engine.0

Is this of any use?[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

I don't see an end to this, so I have been thinking.
I've managed to get hold of a Vista disk (don't ask). I need to save about 40GB worth of files. so Can I partition my HDD to create a smaller disk drive, transfer the wanted files to that drive partition, and format the area that holds Vista, do a fresh install, then transfer the files back to the main drive and delete the partition?[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

Its a drastic measure - vista will allow you to partition the disk but by how much is restricted by your hard disk size and by vista itself.
You would be better off storing your data onto external storage.
But before going through that, try this http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/
Online virus checker and fixer for free.
Also if you go to your c:\ and turn hidden files off and look for autoexec.bat and config.sys - even though these are not relevant to vista - I recall that the virus I once dealt with (same sort of issue as yours) put something into one of these files.0
