  • Whoops, I did a search and then posted this on the 2009 nappy cake thread instead!

I'm going bonkers trying to do a cake, does anyone have any advice? I've got some beautiful thumper things, very cute outfit, lovely bibs and a comforter which is lovely, it's the boy version of this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NWOT-Disne...-/261120627840

I thought it was a lovely topper anyway until trying to use it! I often use comforters on top with a nappy or two to give it the correct shape and a slide to keep it in place. This won just won't Bloomen work! It's very big, there's masses of the material, it's far too long if I want the text under the picture to show (which I don't care about at this point), I've tried placing it on different shapes and sizes of nappies (as in moulded to that shape than weird shaped themselves), I've tried folding the material, rolling it to try and make a round shape and about how I'm ready to throw it out the window (or list it on eBay, I can't believe that link trying to sell it for £30!!!

Does anyone have any advice please (it might save my sanity!) thanks

    Hi vikki_louise

I don't use comforters for the very reasons you stated. I will only use them if they have bodies like a teddy as I can't place them right.

The only thing I can suggest is you use it at the front of the middle tier - folded in a triangle and the 2 edges wrapped around the back. You could then put something on top - a pair of Booties or some flowers etc.:)
  • Thanks moonpenny, if you can't do them then I doubt anyone can! I hadn't told the lady I was doing a thumper theme so I might put either my normal comforter ontop or a lovely photo frame I have and then the thumper outfit and bibs are just a nice add on.

I have another questions- has anyone sold any of their baby bits before? I r,rmember a lady who gave up completely and was selling off all her stock. I'm thinking of trying to as we have got limited room here and I'm just not well enough to make anything except a really quick nappy cake, I have some beautiful things (including lots of sets of the cutest baby set I've ever found-I brought the whole shelf!). I'm not looking to make any profit on it (except the Disney comforters which I will put on eBay from having seen the price they go for!). Any suggestions on the best place to sell it? Probably won't be until after Christmas for now

Hi, sorry to ask a question that I am sure you have all answered many times. Do you use nappies as the "wall" inside the blanket to hold it all up? What size is best?

Most of us use size 3, do you know the baby it's for? You can make any size but most of us avoid newborn as some babies don't fit from day 1 or at least move up a size quickly. You do make the 'wall' from em, think of the nappies as the sponge cake and the blankets as the icing :)

  • Hi
A newbie here, I have been reading your posts and admiring all your beautiful cakes.
I found the thread by accident while doing research into making nappycakes, and really feel that I have found out so much by reading this thread. Hopefully I will be able to post my attempts soon and get some feedback from you. Julie x

Thankyou Vikki_Louise, it would be for a newborn, I am torn between the practicalities of a layette in a handy basket and the novelty of a nappy cake. Will have a play around when I have got everything I need I think.

    Thanks again for your help.xx

Hi mcja, That is the whole point of a Nappy Cake - to be as practical a gift as a layette would be.

Why don't you make a list of what you would include in a Layette and see what items in the list you could incorporate into a Nappy Cake?

Also, the expense is a big factor as all the pieces soon add up.

Maybe a cake would be a bit cheaper, but it depends on how big a layette you want to make.

    Hi ladies,
I've made a fair few cakes now & sold to family and friends but am looking to make a go of this as a small business so thought I'd come here to ask you lovely ladies for some bit of advise..
I need to get my costs down & wondered where people source their 'ingredients' from?? Ive been making cakes for around £15 and selling for £25 but would like to make more for the time & effort it takes me.. & thats just hoping my local 'cheap shops' have the fleece blankets I need.
Also wondered what ingredients people include & for what price please? So I can be on par with everyone else (dont want to over/under charge!).
    Thanks in advance!!!!
