Hi I was wondering if any of you lovely ladies who sell your cakes would please be able to help me. I have been making baby cakes for friends and family for about 6 months and really enjoy making them plus I get great feedback from everyone who has received them and so I was thinking about maybe trying to sell some. However I dont know the first thing about business or the legalities of something like this so I was hoping someone may be able to pass on some advice - for example do I need to register as a business? pay tax? etc and are there any restrictions against selling the cakes, I use branded nappies and toiletries and then clothes I have bought from supermarkets or high street stores, is it ok to buy these and sell them on? I would really appreciate any help that anyone can provide - thanks in advance
If you are going to be selling the cakes then yes you must register with the tax office as a business. Whether you are liable for paying tax depends on the profit you make in a year. However I will say there are already loads of people doing this, through facebook or websites (there are a lot of people from on here too). You only have to google nappy cakes to see how many there are.
I was made redundant last year so with nothing to lose decided to set up business doing nappy/towel cakes. The only trouble is it is a huge outlay as the others who also sell will tell you. I bought a bit wholesale to give a bigger profit, but it is a lot different selling to family and friends to continuously pushing the business and trying to keep the busines coming in.
If you do decide to go for it just be prepared to spend a lot and work very hard to get the business. Good luck x0 -
Thanks Twinklelittlestar, I really appreciate your advice
I have noticed that there are loads of people selling baby cakes on the internet and Im sure it is very hard to set up properly as a business even without all the competition out there - I was really thinking more of just selling to friends of friends rather than just making them for presents or cost price for family which is what I have been doing til now but I see your point about the large outlay as i guess you have to buy the stock in before the orders come and then just hope that they do.
I guess Ill have to give it some thought but thanks again and I really hope things are going well with your business x0 -
Does anyone know where I can get plain coloured "Burp Cloths" from?
I buy the Matalan ones but they come 3 in a pack with only 1 plain and I want all plain. The main colours I am looking for is Pink, Cream and white.
If anyone has seen any on their travels, would you let me know? Thanks!0 -
