I tried this last month and I was a bit ambitious as I ended up spending nearly twice my £40 budget! So this month I'm going to try for £60.

This includes all food to be eaten at home (including takeaways) and all household stuff, but it doesn't include any planned/unplanned meals out (last month I did include unplanned meals out but it didn't work alongside my budget planner, so now I'm counting those separately).

I should be able to stick to it, though I'll need to curb the impulse spending. If I see any good offers then I may go over my budget, but I'll make sure I only buy things I need, and I will make sure I know what's in my cupboards/freezer (I have 3 boxes of fishfingers because I didn't realise I had any and I kept buying them!)

I want to give it a go. Tried in March and April but failed and gave up in May - must try better!
Please put me down for £200.
  • hello. I'm not sure if I'm doing this right as it's my first ever post on MSE! could you please put me down for a June grocery budget of £240? there's me, my DH, two young children and a LOT of visitors who keep popping up all over the place!

    many thanks!!

    Hi LMMS :)

There's no special method; just brown the mince with the chopped onion, grated carrot and oxo. Add a squirt of tomato puree, cook for 1 min, then add the other ingredients and simmer

I dont add oats to my meals anymore but I still get the same number of portions, by adding extra chopped veg instead ;) HTH

Thanks Nikki!! Will definately try them soon, OH loves them!

I'm setting a budget of £80 for food, as I seem to be spending lots on salad, £5 on household bits and £5 on toiletries. So total budget of £90 for the month for two adults. Did really well last month for the first time :D In July I'll do a bigger shop to make sure I have enough dried stuff etc, but I want to keep on whittling down my freezer/tin cupboard down. Roll on June!

First a big welcome to Step Away from the Card!! :D

Hi everyone, MrsM can you put me down for £200 this month please?

I know this is higher than usual but we are going away roughtly the middle of June for a week and I want to allow for one meal of fish and chips and one meal of somesort of lunch for us both.
Also, this month I'm doing things a little differently, having a stashaway month. This is due to the generosity of MR.M and The Sun newspaper, giving out the £5 off a £30 shop vouchers.
With each fiver I'm buying non-perishables ( got a spare washing powder with this week's one, Persil with the bogof Alton Towers voucher  )

Thanks to everyone and here's to an super sunny saving June xxxx

Edit: I've got £39 in Mr.M saving stamps.

  • 1st grocery challenge for me, I'm just back from Mr A I spent £103.54, but a lot of the things I bought will last the month, I still have a couple of thing to buy and will also need to top up with milk, bread, veg and cold meat etc weekly.

I managed to write a shopping list and stick to it, the only thing I bought extra was rice that was on offer so I am allowing myself that.

Hi this is my first MSE monthly challange, I normally have a 400pound budget, but as we are trying to save for a deposit, can you put me down for 250 pound (sorry my pound sign doesn't work) - this is for 2 adults & 2 kids (3&4), this includes food, cleaning, toiletries, home brewing etc (all but utilities & rent basically, looking forward to joining in!!!

Went to Mr T today and spent another 10.21 though did manage to get 12 bottles of squash enough soda crystals to make sure i don't have to buy any wash powder for the next month (if my OH stays away from the machine!), all the pet food apart from budgie seed, cheese and herbs etc so don't think I've done too bad!
Right just have to batten down the hatches and stay away from the shops for a month, lol
